Angry I got taken!!!!

Well my first mercedes diesel expierence is not going well at all. I bought an 83 300sd that had "LIGHT" front end damage that was fixed. The car also needed paint, well then the engine died, so the guy I bought it from had a used engine installed, which worked all right. Except the mechanics did not connect anything right. So after I made them fix an oil leak twice, I also had the car painted, today I took it to Henrys car repair in Ft Worth Tx to have the kickdown cable fixed and the car checked out b\c it was acting weird. They looked at it and it turns out that the frame is bent there are only 2 bolts in the bell housing and it is still leaking oil. They say it is not worth fixing and to take it back to the guy that I bought it from, I am doing that, but I need some hints on finding a good merz diesel b\c I am a college student and I drive 350-450 miles a week. I really can not afford to spend all that much money again. Any ideas?
Thanks, Hudson

If you get another one have a pre-purchase inspection done by someone who knows these cars. Also might ask forum members in your area to be on the lookout for a good car.

Look in the cars section off the home page. Its under Shop Swap Classifieds. You can post what you're looking for as well as see if anyone is putting up something that interests you. A number of very knowledgeable members live in south Texas, you may be able to find help that way too. Good Luck.

I'll bet they aren't those two bolts on the top of the bellhousing either...

I'm really sorry to hear that your are having these problems. Too bad the seller wasn't ethical and worthy of your patronage.

Sure there are always lots of MB diesels for sale on ebay but again, you will need more than anywhere else to have someone inspect the car for you. There are more frequently "nice" cars like yours for sale there than in the local classified section.

I know of a 94K mile 240D automatic for sale in the Dallas area, asking $2500 OBO. E-Mail me offline if you are interested and I will hook you up with the guy's E-Mail address.

I am looking at spending up to 2,500 but preferably less, Does it matter if I get a turbo? Will a non turbo do as well on the freeway as a crusing car? Like a 300sd or how do they compare? What about a stick any advantages to that, other than the fact that I like to drive them.

The 240D is a nice economical car but performance can't be compared to a turbo 300. It only has about 70+ HP compared to 120 HP for the turbo 300. With a stick you have the advantage of being able to start out in 2nd gear where there automatic always starts in 1st. I sometimes wish that I had a stick in my 300D but that thought instantly vanishes the minute I get stuck in traffic. $2500 for the 240D with 94K? GO FOR IT!!! That car isn't even broken in. Even if it didn't get regular oil changes the engine will still last a long, long time.

I dunno. I actually think that 94K is a little too low. These cars need to be driven hard, and I wonder if that's possible given that mileage? Also, many thing deteriorate more quickly on a car that's used sparingly. I think I'd feel better about a car that had seen 8-10K per year (or more) and had regular maintenance. Also, at 2500 that car should be rust free - I guess that's a given down there - and have air conditioning that works.

Anyway, be sure that you can tolerate the performance that you get with a 240D auto. It's almost dangerously slow w/ a couple passengers and A/C running - people will tend to run up your rear end from lights and such.

Hudson,
Man I have been in your shoes! There might still be some kind of light at the end of the tunnel. Did you by the car from an individual or a dealer? Contact me off-line and lets talk! I live in the mid-cities and have two 300SD's and two 300Ds. There are a few really good shops around here so I could give you some advice.
