92 300D 2.5 Turbo -Purchase pistons?
I am rebuilding a 92 300D 2.5 turbo. I need to get pistons. I have looked at many places. No one carries the piston. Fast Lane does not have it. Mercedes wants $480.00 for each piston. Grrrrrr. NO WAY!!!!!!!
I know that someone out there has them. Please send contact information on any shops in US or Canada or ?. I do not care about location. Thank you Nick |
Have you called Phil?

I don't have any pistons, but I do have some other stuff, including a 2.5T injection pump, if you need them.

That's the correct price, sorry.
They are a precision die-cast, not machined, and have some pretty fancy "scrollwork" on the inside for oil cooling. There is an oil jet in the crankcase that sprays oil up into the bottom of the piston to keep the crown from melting at full power. Expect to pay about $2000 for the set -- the 603 set is $2500. Have you priced a rebuilt long block from Metric Motors? If the pistons alone are $2000, an MB crate motor doesn't sound much more expensive considering the warranty you get with it.
How about cutting your losses and looking for another 2.5? Sixto 95 S420 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |
Nick,
Why do you have to replace the pistons? If you pistons are not destroyed, you can have the ring groves rebuilt. An automotive machine shop can put in a steel spacer to bring the ring lands to new size and you can use a stock ring set. If your bores are worn, you can sleeve the engine. These 2 jobs will cost much less than new pistons. Check with your local machine shop. P E H |
