The book calls for ATF. Some people say that modern Dexron III ATF is bad for the seals. Some people use Type A ATF, Some use Mobil 1 10w30, Some use Redline MTL. Like Greg says, do a search and just read up on it.

Whatever you do, don't put gear oil in it.

I'm using the Redline MTL in mine.

I just put Mobil Synthetic ATF in the 5 spd in my 409d. I read a post somewhere on this board of someone else using it.

I don't think that is a ' common' conversion.... but I think it would be a nice one... that leaves you a lot more space in the engine compartment on the passenger side ( than the turbo 5 speed)..... but should be safer integrating with traffic.

Been using Mobil-I ATF since 91 on my 240D 4speed and now on my 5speed Gurkha with great results. The first thing that was noticeable was the smoohtness, especially in cold tranny as well as the level of noise going down. On my 5speed, i can shift with my fingers effortlessly and I have driven in 50c and -10c and the shifting never detiorated. Never had any problems with my seals either.

I thoroughly recommend Mobil-I ATF.

the car has the non turbo 617 engine. it seems to run great. i am not sure what gears are in the rear end. i think it has the stock 240 gears. i need to find out, since there is to tach and i would hate to overspeed the engine. i also need to verify if the speedodometer is correctly set, or if that is even an issue.

it seems to be just as quick as my 85 300sd auto. i suppose that is becase i can wind it up more with the stick. sure is diffucult to float the gears on this one.

Actually, I believe that the gear ratio on turbo 123's from '82-'84 was 3.07. I know my '85 has taller gears...2.8 something, I believe...
