1975 diesel timing

I haven't been able to locate the specs for diesel timing on a 1975 240d, I have been able to find every other model year of course. If anyone can help it wouldbe very much appreciated. I currently have it set 24-26 deg top dead center, but it is running horribly with that setting.

24 BTDC is correct.

What do you mean by running horribly -- may not be timing. Do you have serious starting trouble or lots of smoke or both?

Rough running usually isn't injection timing.

Yes it is smoking / trouble with starting

Thanks for the reply Peter. The engine sounds like it's got "nuts and bolts" rattling around in it. There is lots of smoke and trouble starting. I just installed a new starter. I just reconfirmed the timing at 24. Another valid point may be that I installed a new engine 7 yrs ago, just to be certain that I'm using the right specs the engine # is 616-916-10-01-3906 it is in a 1975 240d but who knows maybe the engine I got was from something else, I know it's a stretch but just incase.
