92 300D 2.5 Turbo diesel pistons Life?
Rebuilding engine- car has 300,000 miles on it.
Some members have recommended to use pistons again. I will have them checked out. Can I get another 500,000 miles on these pistons? What is the life of diesel pistons? Thank you Nick PS-Thank you to P.E.Haiges=excellent input to have a steel spacer put in. This will bring the ring lands to a new size. |

If the pistons measure up to specification than reuse should not be a problem.
If I were rebuilding it, I would prefer installing new pistons. I would hate to think that I saved a few bucks only to dismantle and reassemble the engine a second time in a short amount of time. I do not care to do a job this large twice on the same vehicle, and on the same visit. If you are looking to sell the vehicle plus maintain a good margin than your decision might be to reuse the pistons. |

I followed Nick's thread in the Diesel forum. OM602 pistons are $500 a pop!

IF the pistons are not seviceable, it sounds like replacing them is cost prohibitive. I would probably source a long-block and see if that was a less expensive alternative.
602 pistons are $500?
