black oil leak onto brake pedal

yep, that's right.

1980 300TD Wagon, 310,000, runs great.
The other day I noticed a 6" diameter oil stain in the carpet below my brake pedal. The oil drips down ONTO the brake pedal directly, then to the floor. The car does go through oil, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. I did recently top it up. I looked under the hood for signs of recent leaks of oil and around the master cylinder, couldn't find anything. I don't even know what black oil should be running through that part of the car.
Can't find previous posts that describe this problem.
Any suggestions?

Just a guess, but could it be a leak in the line going to the oil pressure gauge?

I second your guess as it being the oil pressure line going to the instrument cluster. I would address that one asap.
While I was down there, I would also take the time to fix the cruise control box if it isn't working, change some bulbs if they aren't working in the instrument cluster, lube the speedo cable.
Does anyone know if there is anything else to do pre-emptively?
Have fun, Adam Bush

Are you sure it is oil? It may look like oil on your carpet. I had a '66 Chrysler Newport that had a leaky master cylinder. It leaked through the INSIDE of the firewall.

More pre-emptive work behind dashboard..... clean the coil on dashlight dimmer switch with soft brass brush or extra fine sandpaper.

Regarding the oil guage line - you might get lucky and just find the nut is loose that connects it to the guage.
