Okay DsLBnz, if that's your real name, you made me do it and I did it. I pushed the SDL today and here's what I got:

- 1-2 shift is always automatic and couldn't get it higher than 4900rpm

- lazing up to redline in second, I hit a wall at 4800rpm. I was a dot beyond the second gear mark in the speedo. Going heavy through second and goosing it near the end got me to about 5100rpm. Holding redline for a half mile with the AC off got the engine temp to 100C.

- lazing up to redline in third, I hit the same wall at 4800rpm. I was also a dot beyond the third gear mark on the speedo. Going heavy through third and goosing it near the end got me to just kiss 5000rpm. Holding redline for 4-5 miles with the AC off got the engine temp to ~95C.

- moving the shift lever to D at 5000rpm in third caused a heck of a shift but the tranny's shifting so much more smoothly since. Must have blown some gunk off the tranny as well

I'm telling you now, you will not coax me into doing the same with the S420 :p

As a matter of opinion, I prefer the growl of the 603 at revs to the muted buzz of the 119 through the insulation of the S420.

Glad to hear your car is shifting better. If you looked in your rear-view mirror as you were pushing the diesel at 5100, you should've seen all kinds of carbon flying out the exhaust.

I first did this little experiment after browsing the mbz.org diesel list archives. The result is even better if you're driving on an incline. Just make sure you change the oil frequently if you drive it that hard!:p

Sometimes I put the defroster on to draw heat away from the engine. Got to be careful about those aluminum heads.

Hey, the movie links are dead. Also, how about posting a movie that shows the SDL from a dead stop (zero MPH) to at least 60mph in a straight line, no turn at the start? Shouldn't be that hard to find an empty road, or get to the front of traffic at a red light...

Yeah the quicktime movie links are not working. I am anxious to see them!

I have a little clip of me taking off in a straight line from a stop. Doesn't last long. I know the tach doesn't start at 500 like from an idle, but the you know how slippery the TC's are in 300SDL's!

Try it now. The video is not anything special, really. I let off the "gas". No, I am not diesel-dumb, I let off the accelerator.

The video is short and you may not want to watch it. It's only 0-40'ish before I let off. Good fuel though, and only 19 degrees outside.

About the red light possibility. I really don't feel like getting grabbed by the local authorities. It has happened once, and would happen again.

I only do my runs coming on to highways with at least 55 mph speed limits, so its either a turn or a ramp.

Love the movies!

But I can't get your E420 clip to work... does the file no longer exist on the server? Or the link broken? That's the one I really want to see. My buddy has an E420 and he gets nowhere near 22mpg! He sees more like 18 tops.

Depends on how you drive, really. The E420 clip didn't have very good sound, but I will repost it. The M119's really fly at the higher speeds, though.
