300sd center vents

Can anybody tell me when the center vents in an 83 300sd should be on? I just got the AC working and thought it would blow out from there. It seems they don't get used for anything or are non functional. How do I check them. Also what is the function/purpose of the center vent in the rear console. It seems to blow outside air in and also maybe AC?

Thanks,
Paul

the original car manual will tell you all these things specifically in the climate control section.

from my memory and experience, the center/rear consoles have to be opened with the sliders, then depending on the selection on the climate control thing, the (which means economy) blows non-a/c air, and the rest activate the a/c, except the and the (far left button). Heat should not come out of the rear console, only fresh or a/c air.

Heat should never exit the center two vents, just fresh air on econ. or refrigerated air in auto. You probably have a vacuum pot not holding vacuum or a vacuum switch electrically failed.

You should get fresh air and a/c from the center vents and the rear console. If your dash center vents are not working, I would suspect the vacuum pod for them is leaking. Here is a post discussing this: 300SD Climate Control
