Because the first "g" (hard) reminds us of a "q" and we are programmed to follow a "q" with a "u".

Now don't get 'gage' mixed in there because I believe that is used in a different sense. We are normally around 14.7psia (absolute pressure) where as we are at 0psig (gage pressure) however you don't have a pressure gage you have a pressure gauge. I don't know why they get used like that, but that is the way I see always see it being used.
What I wonder is why can't anyone ever use the right word for brake and break....

I don't see that one very much, but I noticed my dad spelled it as convertable the other day, I told him he spelled it wrong but did he listen? No.

And these bug me a little, too:
"Be careful, or you'll loose (lose) the pressure you had built up..." "Thanks, guys. I appreciate all the good advise (advice)..." "Your (you're) going to get yourself in trouble one of these days." ...but I'm probably just splitting hairs here.

I don't seem to notice the advise one as much but the others I see all the time. When I first got online with all the different forums or whichever form of reading I was so caught up in people's poor grammar that I could hardly understand what they were trying to say. I guess I just got adjusted and decode the encoded messages now.
A spell checking program would only find if it were a word, not if it were the proper word. Microsoft word typically picks up on this sort of stuff though, I like to keep my usage of this at a minimum though. I find the more I use the auto correct and spell check the worse I begin spelling. I almost never spell check my posts, just if I know I misspelled a word and can't think of it off hand. Splitting hares, that could get messy!

There are grammar checkers which do a good job... I think the first and most famous was based on Strunk's " The Elements of Style" revised by E.B. White....

The trouble with Microsoft spell checker is it doesn't allow nearly enough 'U's.
And grammar checker would be a whole lot more useful if it gave a better alternative (like 'do not start this sentence with the word 'and'').:p Didn't E.B. White write Charlotte's Web??
