Weird Engine/Trans Noise
 

I started having this weird noise about a week ago. I only hear it when the clutch is depressed. It sounds like a mild grinding or something & I can feel it through the clutch pedal too. I can't really figure out where it's coming from. It goes up & down with the engine, not with the speed of the car. When the clutch is all the way up it goes away, if it's down even a little bit I can hear & feel it. It doesn't seem like it's coming from the engine itself either.
I'm not sure if that's the greatest explanation. Anyone have any idea what it could be? The car is running fine otherwise, I don't notice it affecting anything right now.

That's kinda what I'm wondering. Where would one be that would sound like that?

It could (most probably ) be your pilot bearing or your throw-out bearing.... always replace both of them at the same time...while you are up in there...and I would never leave the old clutch in there and put it back together either..... those three things are almost always replaced together....
I had an oilite pilot bushing that actually Screeched.... in a 1968 6 cyl Chev.... but I put in a bearing as a replacement...

Leathermag, Is the throwout bearing the release bearing? I was looking through fastlane & that's what I found. Also, is there any reason to replace the pressure plate when replacing the clutch disk?

I just called Advance Autoparts & they have a whole kit with the clutch plate, pressure plate, both bearings & some kind of alignment tool for $224. Seems like a good deal. Guess this will be a project for the near future!

You would not normally replace the pressure plate... unless it has some heat marks .... purple darkened areas... and heat checks...little cracks..... or unless it is not flat due to overheating..this would normally be found by it ' chattering ' when you start to let out the clutch pedal...
It is nice that you did not consider that too much money.... but you are going to have the labor involved also....
Did you check with Fastlane here on this site ? I suspect you can get the pilot bearing, release bearing,alignment tool , and clutch plate for way less than that amount....

Well, it's still $204 plus shipping through fastlane, without the alignment tool or pressure plate. I didn't see the tool on there. Luckily my neighbor has a car lift in their garage/shop & they do trans repair all the time, so with any luck they'll help me out with it. I'll talk to them tonight, hopefully I'll get it done next weekend.
