The specs for the 722.314 transmission that we put into Thing One's wagon was between 5.5 and 6.5 quarts. But, remember that is a total fill (pan and torque converter both drained) into a dry transmission.
If you've drained both the pan and the converter, the best practice is to put about 4 quarts in, start the engine and let it idle while you shift through all the gears (including reverse). After doing this, check the fluid level (engine idling in park) and add fluid as needed to bring the level into the correct area on the dipstick. Since hydraulic fluid expands slightly when heated, it is better to be a slight bit low on fluid than to overfill the transmission.
