I'm sure ya'll never heard this one but.....
Miss the old 86 300sdl, and need a new car. Currently have a 96 acura in the process of being fixed/sold, don't ask.....Moved to ATL, GA a few weeks ago, and have been looking at MB diesels again....First off, have seen a couple of 97 300E for upper teens with 70-90K, but still miss the old 80's tanks. Are these new E classes as well put together, (too many electronic controls)??, or should I look for another old tank to restore like the last? Also heard the early 90's 300's with the 5cyl, were strong. Any info, as usual, cordially invited...Best to all.
PS Geting married next year, and would appreciate saving some $$$$.......by the way, the 300sdl I restored for her brought us together... |

Better yet.... dig back a couple generations and get the uncommon mid '70's 115 body style 240D with stick shift and sunroof - assuming you can find one in decent shape at MB mecca Atlanta..... Figure on buying a decent 115 for less than $1500 - then investing another $1G to cherry it out with new drivers seat, carpeting and fiddly bits, thats all. Play your cards right, claiming sacrifice at owning 30 yr. old car thatsa cult classic and more easy to maintain than anything built in the last 20 yrs..... and your wife will love you forever.

Sold the SDL
You sold your SDL I could not imagine getting rid of my SDL - having the opportunity to play the rental car game throughout the country few cars awe me like my SDL. Just closing the door on the SDL tells you it's solid and 28 mpg to boot. I hope to learn enough at this forum to take on the responsibilities of owning a 94/95 600SEL adding that to the stable.

Just my humble opinion, the 600 SEL/SEC is WAY to expensive to maintain. I have heard of 12 injectors replaced costing about $10 large. Everything about these cars is expensive, and for what? Smooth idle? They aren't that quick.

I used to drive an '85 300D but just recently purchased a '97 E300D. At first, I didn't know if I would really like the '97. The old one has so much style and class. The new one just doesn't have any of that charm. However, after having the new one for about 2 months now, I can say that I love that car. It is such a great driving car that I never want to give it up. Of course, I said that about the '85 to when I first got it. I still drive the '85 every now and then and do enjoy it but the '97 is much more comfortable. I guess it's a trade off - a really cool classic car or a really cool more refined car. By the way, the '97 has 233k on it and runs like a brand new car. They are still well built.

If you're looking for a diesel, look at the turbos. IMHO, you will be killed on 285 in a 240D.

The funny thing is that it seems the 5 cyl turbo's get as good a mileage as the 4 cyl 240d's.... and are much faster and safer in traffic...
Maxwell, please quit running up the cost of 240 manuals until I get some parts cars stashed... thanks.... |

--------------------------------------------------------------- Yes, but it's the challenge. This is more of a hobby with me (MB's)
