Many times over the years, while sitting at a light or something, I've had people close their windows and look at me funny when they hear, or smell my Diesel pull up. Especially if they're on the phone or something. I do not blame them however, and many times I do the very same thing even being the guy who's driving the noisy, stinky things.

I especially hate the smell and noise of the small truck "Fake" diesels though. The "Cummins", in the dodge, the GM Poser Diesel "Duramax", or the wonderful, Ford/International built "Powerstroke" engines. I cannot stand the smell of these Mercedes, or of the "Fake" Diesel in my 83 Olds Custom Cruiser wagon either.

Seems the actual smell of the smaller Diesels, is much harder to deal with and less tolorable than the smell of the big ones like what's in my Freightliner Century class tractors. Or the ones in any Real trucks for that matter.

However, gripes or not, all of the noise and stink, will NEVER deter me from owning and driving Diesels. It's a plain fact that they just run better, more reliable, and more economical than gas jobs. So they still take the cake any day of the week. I don't care who has to roll up their windows, including myself.

Nick

How are you defining "Fake" diesel? AFAIK, either it has a diesel or it doesn't.

I think it is called "an Italian tune up".

When I first got my first 300D I used to just drive out slowly, and this would really piss alot of people off. NTIC

.....but many times I am driving the speed limit and still get pricks in giant $h!tboxes pulling right up to my bumper at 35 MPH on a local street like I am going to actually pull over for the jerk because he has to get to Home Depot or the Flea Market 20 seconds sooner.
So I do enjoy throwing the old D into neutral and giving them a nice black blow job they rightly deserve.

Anything that's either not in a class 8 truck, or is a gas "Converted" engine like the one in my Olds......Is a "Fake" diesel, as far as I'm concerned. Just because it runs on the stuff, doesn't mean it's a good Idea, or it should.

5 cylinder gas engines in these cars wuld have loads more power, simply because of design advantages. They also would not be such a pain in the @$$ to start in cold weather and would be easier to work on and get parts for. Less noisy and stinky as well. I love my diesel vehicles but I really love my gas jobs even more. Like my 82 280CE, and my 88 560 SEC. The 280 CE will kick the pants off of the diesel cars (Turbo or non Turbo), every time you try it. Plain and simple, with less noise, and stink to boot.

uhh, dude, all the speeds these diesel cars go are slow. The only options we have is slow, slower, or really slow, stop or reverse, which is also slow by the way. Air horns should be fine all the time...LOL

You mean the "I want to be a truck driver when I grow up" toys.

I do prefer the gas cars for one more reason. You will never find a fuel station that doesn't sell gas but you can always find a fuel station that doesn't sell diesel. I got the diesel because the wife travels quite far and at that time, it was cheaper. Today, not so with diesel being more expensive.

So the part of this whole thing that doesn't make sense to me is the black smoke. I love the sound, the feel of a diesel car. But I consider something to be broken if I'm getting black smoke out the back. Why do people try for it?

Didn't you ever put baseball cards in your bicycle spokes when you were eight? Now, picture an eight year old with with $40K.

None that I can think of. For one, my car is debadged, doesn't smoke and isn't noticeably slow by any means, so people often don't know it's a diesel (plus the 124 doesn't look that old). On the flipside, I do occasionally get positive remarks about it from other people who have diesel sedans (new or old, MB or other). The only negative I get is some good-natured ribbing from co-workers and friends who have to listen to me go on and on about diesel all the time ... and to be honest I enjoy that back-and-forth. My car isn't even slow, but I still have a sense of humor about that kind of thing. If someone is way off base I might correct them (yeah, my car DOES actually go quite a bit faster than 60 mph!), but for the most part, I can have a laugh at my own expense. I mean come on, 240Ds are slow and not very quiet ... that's part of their charm to those of us who have the fine taste to appreciate them ... why worry if someone else thinks we're odd? Some folks don't have the capacity to understand posterity, frugality, sentimentality, character and the other virtues behind the rattle of the 240D.
