Newbie with strange diesel leak

My '83 240D that I have had for a month now has developed a diesel leak. I filled it up for the first time (I have only been partially filling it up before) yesterday, and now there is a puddle of diesel on the ground after it sits for a while. I look under the read of the car, and the diesel is coming out of what looks like a drain tube near the rear axle. I thought that this might be an overflow, and I might have filled it up too far. But it has been leaking for 24 hours now and am suspicious. Any ideas on what might be going on?

Lance

Sounds like you really, really filled her up. I think it's just overflow. Open your fuel flap and you'll see a small hole that diverts overflow.

When you pump fuel from a large cold tank into a small relatively warm one it will expand somewhat.

You're describing the area of the fuel feed hose. It comes straight down from the tank and loops over the right axle then feeds into a hard line to the engine bay. Simple to replace once the fuel tank is empty.

If you're planning to replace it (I hope so) consider cleaning the mesh screen just above. Read the recent post on 44mm socket.
