Tires squeeeeel- '83 240d
 

the tires squeel when make a turn at around 30mph or higher. my other car is an 850 volvo. granted the tires on the 850 are probably higher performance but is this normal for the stock 175/14 tires on the benz? one other note, the benz is newly acquired and from what i understand, it has been sitting around for a while. could it be that the tires are just hardened with age?

I'd look into some new shocks. I've found tire squeal is usually from speed or a worn suspension.

Depends on the tires as well..some tires grip better than others, of course, and begin squealing at different speeds.

The only way I could get the tires to squeal on my 240 would be to drop a small block in it......

not all tires are the same, the rubber is diferent, i have had tires that squell when parking in a parking space and tires that didnt squeel ever! not even when peeling out(tis was on my pick up truck) they were high mileage tires. strange isnt it. i wouldnt worry about it if your were, besides a 30MPH U-Turn, thats pretty damn fast!

I would replace the rear shocks alongwith suspension and linkage bushes. I replaced mine with neoprene bushes and the result was quite satisfactory. After the job, do a thorough 4 wheel alingment job from a reputed place.

Check the tire pressure too. A lower performance tire with the low end of the air pressure recommendations will more likely to squeal than a higher performance tire with more pressure. But, yes, a W123 will roll and heavily load the outside tires, likely more so than many other cars, and the extra load will make them squeal sooner. The surface you are driving on will have an effect too. The smoother the more likely you are to hear the squeal. Jim
