616 engine question

Reading over the MBZ engine service manual, it lists two 616.912 engines, one with 44kW and one with 53kW of power. The only difference I can determine is that the camshafts are different; that is the valve timing is different and 53kW engine's camshaft has a different stamping on the end.

From reading the specs, it seem that most 616.912 engines in the US are the 44kW version. At least all other specs I have read conform to the valve timing of the 43kW engine.

Does anyone know anything about this 53 kW engine? Is the difference only the cam/valve timing? The real question is, could I replace the camshaft in my engine with a different one and get a little more horsepower?

M.

MB put the 616 engine in their range of vans 207-407. Someone posted on here at one time that the van engines had different cams which produced more horsepower. I was somewhat skeptical about this because most of the ratings I have seen on the vans were the 44kw, although it is possible that the higher powered motor you refer to was in the vans. If it is the van engine, there are a couple of other differences. The oil filter housing in the van points down and back and is changed from below. It also has a different valve cover and water pump.

MB used the OM616 72BHP engine for their Tempo Traveler series vehicles and it is still being manufactured by their subsidiary Bajaj-Tempo here in India. There is virtualy no difference between the 65BHP and 72BHP OM-616 except for the fuel pump and callibration. The revised fuel pump gives 1000 rpm more than the original OM-616's 4200rpm. The torque figure is up from the original engine. The existing OM 616 can be easily modified by using the newer pump. All other parts in the engine including the cam is the same. I have done this mod on two 240D with great results but to take the maximum benefit of the increased rpm range you need the close ratio 5 speed tranny instead of the standard 4 speed.

Is Bajaj-Tempo licensed to build the 5-speed transmission that would attach to the 616 engine? If so they might have an export market here in the US.

Plenty of people would put that on either the 616 or 617 engine - it would probably be cheaper than repairing the automatic transmission when it eventually fails.

Ken300D,

The OM 616 and 617 are both being made here in turbo and normaly aspirated form. The TX-17 and TX-18 trannies from ZF are also being made here. The TX-18 is the same 5 speed used in their Euro 300D 5 speed and fits both ON-616/617 nicely. If you need, will find out the prices for both.

Obaid,

The differential is from the MB 407 series truck, not the 240D, however the Hanomag diff is the same as the independent rear suspension found on the 240D.

This is the manufacturer's site.

If someone can become an importer at one end, there is potential for good business here.

Thank you Gurkha for the link. I will call them or fax them a letter in a day or so. I have a very noisy differential and needs replacement as repairing it has failed twice. Thanks once again
Obaid
