blower motor --again !

'86 SDL 126

I've got all the symtoms of a fan motor. It pulses with fits and starts. Fuses are all good. Can probably fix it if I can get to it.

Problem is, can't get to it. Unscrewed 3 long screws under the glove box on the upholstered panel and one big plastic fastener that went into the center consol.

But I can't pull the panel out. seems to be still fastened by something. I don't want to break anything.

What the heck am I missing? Tried for the last hour. Nothing is simple !!! H E L P !!!

Alan911,
Pull out the glove box. Below it you will see the air sampler blower. It has a tube and connector that need to be disconnected. It is mounted on the panel you are trying to remove so the connections need to be off before you drop the panel. Last time I got to my blower I did not need to drop that panel, just the back black plastic one. It can be done just by having the front "carpeted one loose. The blower motor is covered by another panel attached with 4 (I think) screws After you get that panel off, the blower is attached with 3 more. Hope this helps.

Did you remove the kick panel? There's a nut you have to remove that's covered by the kick panel.

blower problem

the blower motor outside panel is also held up by a metal clasp type gizmo toward the front of the car. Unless it is removed it will still hold up the panel. (it is on the back of the panel toward the front end, at least it is on my 84 300 SD)

Took the glove box out and see what you mean. No need to remove the the front panel. No way to get it out anyway.

Took the kick plate off and just took the upper back plastic cover off. Now I can see the motor cover.

Looks like a few screws and two shinny brass springy clips holding it at the back.

If the blower just unscrews by the 3 screws and drops out, looks like I'm home free.

All the goofing around under the dash made the motor run again but I'm going to take it out anyway and go through it.

Tons of thanks for all the info.

Look for the thread with the subject line "I fixed my blower motor for $6.03" or something like that. If futzing in the area makes the blower motor work, the brushes are worn.

Sixto,

I read your thread before I dove it. I figured for that price I'd give it a shot instead of taking to to the dealer for $250.

See what you started...... I know we're suppose to gain some knowledge from this board but, this is getting out of control.

Thanks again for the help.

New motor (hence new armature) is always the way to go. If you can't find brushes, I can get them this exact size at our local elec motor place.

Here's pics of new ones ($2.36/each) next to the old ones:

Problem with my motor is that the armature was just shot:

So I chucked it up and machined it flat again, but it's WAY worn down and won't last long this way:

I'll be looking through the junkyards for another motor, but for all the hassle, $60 is the best deal around (if I weren't professionally unemployed, I'd just spend the $'s on the new one and be done with it!)
