300 TD Wagon Headrest question.
Does anyone know if the rear headrests in a 300TD (1983) are the same as they are in the 300D?
Thanks. |

Mine does not have headrests in the rear. They would make it awkward to put them flat without removing the headrests.

Hmmmm... so are you saying that the '83 shouldn't have headrests in the back? (Not the third row seating...)... the second row.
? Thanks. |

W123 TDs have two sets of headrest post holes - one set for when the back seats (middle row if third row is present) are up and another set for when the back seats are down.
I don't know if the front and rear headrests can be swapped. I thought I saw that rear headrest posts have a dogleg but maybe I'm thining of another car. Sixto 95 S420 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

From what I remember, headrests for the second-row seats were optional unless the car came with the third-row seat, in which case you'd get headrests too.
Also, in wagons without the third-row seat that DID have optional the headrests in back, the headrests are adjustable forward-and-back as well as up-and-down (like the front headrests), whereas headrests in wagons with the third row seat are only adjustable up and down. My wagon has the third row seat and three headrests on the backs of the second row. The headrests come out easily when folding the seats down and can be inserted into holes in the exposed backs of the bottom cushions of the second row seats.

Eric,
Is that the way things are suppose to be (as in your pic) if I have the third seat? Thanks. |

My '85 TD wagon is a euro and is configured with 3 headrests in the middle seat. Upon flattening the cargo area, one must remove the headrests or else it won't lay down correctly.
The third seat has no headrests and no allowance (holes) for them. Don

The headrests in the second row are also there for the 3rd row passengers - which is presumably why if your wagon has the 3rd row seats the headrests in the second row don't tilt (wouldn't do the 3rd row passengers any good in an accident if the headrests tilted back on impact).
I just checked and my non-tiltable second row headrests also have the slits... Probably just to save $$$ by not making two different kinds of headrest upholstery.

My '85 came from the factory with two headrests on the middle (second) seat and no third seat. My guess is that the headrests were optional if you had no rear seat. I prefer having just two because it leaves the center open for better rear visibility.

Just came back from the local pull-a-part with two front headrests from a W126. They were power adjusted in the W126 but they fit PERFECT in my middle seats of my TD. I still need to find a third for my middle position, but it looks fine with two.
"Peyton300TD: it would be REALLY nice if these rear headrests tilted forward." In the picture it looks like they can based on the slots in front of the metal posts on them. Since the ones i grabbed are from the front they lean forward nicely. I agree with lrg, no center headrest does provide a better rearview. |
