Pricey Bulbs!

C$5 (Oct 2003) for Fuel Reserve Indicator bulb holder at the dealer!

BTW, ensure that you protect the dash (below the instrument panel along the ignition key) when you're doing the work. The sharp corners of the instrument panel cluster has left some dimples on mine. Hopefully in time it will return to its original form.

All is working now.

"speedo cable not having enough slack"

You did slack it off in the eng compartment right?

Good point about the dash getting buggered up, I noticed mine has a couple of scratches after my operation on the cluster.

Old post I am reading before removing the instrument panel in my 81 300SD. What exactly is a flare wrench?

I am going to repair the odometer.

Looking for an old post that told how to form a tool to slip in and remove the entire instrument cluster. Anyone remember what the thread is entitled?

I'm not sure this is an issue, if you simply take off the kick panel underneath you can reach up behind and push it out. No need for special tools to pull it out. At least on the W123 but I can't imagine the W126 being much different.

What Rick Miley was referring to is the brass fitting which connects the 'live oil feed' line to the back of the instrument cluster on 123 chassis diesels and gassers. The oil line fitting is visible in the ifixit guide you posted a link to. If you break the brass fitting, you will have to plug the live oil feed line. Otherwise when you turn the ignition the next time, you will be getting 'live oil' into your dashboard and floor panels (or in my case, on my pants and driver's seat).

You need a wrench to remove the the fitting. Flared wrenches help with this.

FYI, in 1981, the 300sd could have either been a w116 300sd, or a w126 300sd. If it is a w116, they definitely have live oil feed lines to the back of the cluster. I am 90% sure that the w126 chassis model 300sd's also had this.

Peachparts and youtube . Take pictures with you camera .And mark up the bube holders and the hole they go in to .The speedo cable is holding it in there ,remove this and you will have more room. It will come out if you push 4 plastic pieces in the top and bottom .After i had done mine i put vasaline on top of the speedo head on the white parts to hep next time i remove it.
