It's a wheel mounting pin. You screw it into one of the holes on the hub, and helps you to position the wheel.

Thank you Speedy300DTurbo. Funny that it is not mentioned in the owners manual.

It's 126-403-00-74. It comes in handy whenever you're putting a wheel back! Not just when you have a flat tire.

Can't you just use one of the lugs for that?

I don't think you get it. Say you have to change a front tire on a RWD car, so the hub spins freely. You take off the old wheel and put the spare on the hub. How do you line up the bolt holes? Can be quite a pain, especially if you have to do it in the dark.

What MB intended was for you to remove the old wheel, then screw this tool into one of the empty bolt holes. Then you have the tool and the hub to help you line everything up perfectly. Install one or more lug bolts, and then remove the tool.

While not entirely necessary, it is very handy to have.

Not all hubs have lugs. Some are bolted to the hub (my Daewoo is one), and having an alignment tool is nice for those types of setups.

Okay, I did not think of that as the way to use it. After all, we have a well lighted shop and coworkers to hold the brake
