What Diesel should I put in a G-Wagen?

If the characteristics I want in a MB engine are the following, which engine should I put in my G-Wagen?:
-Reliability (perhaps this means getting a naturally aspirated over a turbo? Turbos have more electronics.
-Fuel efficiency. (I don't really care that much about power. However, this doesn't necessarily mean I want a small engine. Many of the older small engines aren't that efficent).[B]Longevity

You'll want to exchange ideas with Ghurkha. He has the Indian version of a g-wagon with a factory turbo 616 in it. He can give you the skinny.

No electronics on a 617 turbo. I'd go for the 617 turbo myself, given your parameters.

MB turbodiesels offered in the US through the 83 model year have as much engine electronics as a 180D... to run anyway. Tach is a different story. Some 84s and 85s have electronics to manage emissions controls and to smooth the onset of boost but those devices can be jettisoned with no performance penalty if local laws and your conscience allow. If you don't mind a few dangling wires you can go full mechanical with an 86-87 6cyl turbodiesel.
