i am coinsidering buying a 1974 model diesel 4 speed 240 from out of state. A friend who drove it said it has no pick up and smokes (black in color) visible in rear view mirror but once crusing runs cleaner. No smoke upon idle. And no noticible smell.

Any knowledege of why this could be would be appreciated as soon as possible

. Is the friend very knowledgeable in these cars? Has he ever driven a 240D prior to this test drive? All of these cars drive like that

. Try to find someone that is experienced in these cars to do a PPI (do a search on the button at the top right of the page to find out more about them).

If there is no rust and the car is inexpensive then I would go for it?

thanks for the fast reply. Both my friend and self are novices. Body and interior are great. Drives mechanically sound. windshield washer fluid does not squirt although resevoir is full but otherwise no major obvious problems.

thanks for the go for it. Im alwys the sceptic. any other info is always appreciated.

You need to look past the non-working windshield washer squirter

. Is there anyway you can get underneath the car and look around with a bright light. You did not provide the mileage numbers but there are certain items that wear out that can run into some big $$'s if you do not do your own work. You can easily sink a grand into suspension rebuilds. Are maintenance records available with the car?

Yeah, for example please make sure the blower motor works. . . you'll be glad you did. . .

No maintenence records

2000$ asking price

friends test drive evidenced no rattles, suspension strong under quiet and efficent hard braking and cornering. But again chuck is no expert and wouldnt know what to look for anyway

Blower motor? I know that i can search and find this info but i also know that ill get it faster from you experts. What is the function and How do i assure that the bolower motor is working.

Actually, search is faster

. . . what I meant is that to replace the blower motor on this particualr chassis (the 115, may as well get the lingo down) you have to remove a bunch of other things, making this a 10+ hour job. Because labor frequently ends up being more than the value of the car

it often isn't repaired at all. It's almost as bad as the 108/109 chassis (late 60s early 70s S class) which sort of set the standard for ridiculous effort for simple repairs...

I have a 74 and it's a great old car.Black smoke could be IP out of time, a bad injector, they are super tough fun to drive cars I plan to do a complete restore on the old girl some day. Two thousand would have to be a really good one if I were buying........
