seat bottoms don't have HORSEHAIR!?!?!

I was taking apart my original seat cover for the seat bottom only to discover it wasn't horsehair underneath as I expected. Instead it was this foam.

See below. The foam is much softer than the horsehair and fills the upholstery better. I don't understand why the horsehair is being sold for seat rebuilds then. shouldn't they be selling this molded foam?

I already bought a new spring set and horsehair pad for it and maybe i don't need or want the horsehair. Any ideas?

Actually, I'll take this one step further and ask if anyone knows if the foam's being sold? I've got the horsehair and would like to make my seats softer...they need a rebuild anyways (and also desperately need new covers; I still wish I could feasibly get cloth covers!)...

Thanks!

Hi.

If I remember correctly on cars with leather
seats, the seats didn't have horsehair pads
but the foam pads.

I might be wrong, please chime in if I am.

Louis.

I found the same foam pad in my '85 when I replaced the spring. Installed the new spring and it is the difference between night and day.

You should find it.

Edit: the foam was only offered on 81 and
earlier leather seats.

Yep, I just caught that.

Someday in the distant future, I want to get my hands on a set of OEM cloth seat covers, and completely re-do the seats...my leather (except the back seat) is in pretty sad shape.

looks like ill be sending these horsehair pads back and trying to purchase the foam. if not, ill just swap driver and passenger seat foams for even wear and use them.

thanks guys.

by the way, why are all these places advertising the sale of this horsehair when such few 123's actually use it!?

here's a picture of the new pad vs old pad and the new cover vs the old cover.

the old cushion has a part number on it. so im sure it can be purchased through the dealer, ill try to figure out cheaper venues first.

I think Performance products sells them.

Leather cover. $475
MB-tex. $275

MB-tex cushion(horsehair?) $105.79
Leather cushion to mid 82 $165.24 240,300TD,D
Leather cushion from mid 82 $105.79 240,300TD,D

MB-tex-Leather to mid 78 $204.60 280CE,300CD

There is more but it goes according to chassis #'s.
This is just to give you a comparison to MB dealer
prices.

Louis.
