www.craigslist.org might be of some help.
In that price range you won't get anything to write home about. And it'll probably need constant attention to get everything working properly and feeling right (suspension, steering, climate control, seats, door locks, etc.). For the same amount of money I'd go for a turbodiesel that needs a bunch of work over a non-turbo in better condition (since rust is not an issue in the Bay Area) and fix things as time and budget allow. But that's just me. I hope you plan to do your own work because there's no way you'll stick to a budget if you take a $1500 MB to a shop for every little thing. Look at classifieds for SF Chronicle, there is a 300D with a newer
engine but the price is higher than your budget.Contracosta times also is a good classified section. Just keep an eye out,it takes a while and sometimes not. On any car you buy expect to put in $1K to get it up to snuff unless you get a pretty good one. My friend Medi in Concord can direct you to car auctions or he may have 300d to sell (925-682-9174) Good Luck

BTW, Sixto, when I E-mailed you a few weeks ago about the 300SD, Seth's the friend I was talking about. He's also the one that was looking at that 240D in SoCal (the one I posted a while back about that would start but knocked)...but I think they sold it out from under him. He'll correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he primarily wants a car that has a happy drivetrain, and doesn't care all that much about the "extras". He's not necessarily looking for a creampuff (I"m sure he'd take one if one came his way and was in his price range, though ), but doesn't want a "project car" either...that's what his Corvair's for. He's wanting a reliable daily driver, mainly, and he liked my 300D so much that he wants one for his own :p although I think his first choices are a 240D 4 speed and a 126 300SD... |

Well, about 2-3 weeks ago I posted some diesels that were for sale.
A 240D, 4 speed, 178K miles for about $1500-1700. I have since deleted that post because I figured they were sold already. Also a 300D 200+K miles for $1500..... That was found in the Contracosta times. Keep an eye out. They are out there. Or get a car from an auction. $500 -- Good ones are given away for tax deductions and get sold at auction. good meaning that they need some work but not that bad.....of course there are junky ones also.

Wow a '65 Corvair. We had one of those when I was in High School. Fast but blew oil out the back when it got older. Lots of memories.
Joe.

$29,000 off MSRP
I just picked one up in Sacto this last week. I found the original window sticker with the paperwork. I figure I got $29,000 off the MSRP of January 1980. It has 296000 miles and runs fine. A few bugs need to be worked out but I don't think any thing I cannot handle. I.e>
Oil leaking from oil filter base at the block Oil leaking from oil cooler hose Driver seat springs broken (picked up some @ Ur Pullin it) Radiator fan on while cold ???????? Worked fine on a hot day?? Recharge AC and check out Rewire speakers (Oh yeh it came with a new Sony CD) Done stuff: Wash under hood Wash and wax ----- Looks like a $Million$ Rotate tires, (Good set of Michlins) air em up Check out brakes (Good) PS on Graigs list, I drove to San Jose and looked at so called !!!!Nice!!! cars that I would'nt trust to get me home on a $2 bet. But keep lookin I got mine for $1050 including all factory manuals. Wife wants rid of it though, she thinks it may replace her low mi 280SEL
