What does timing chain slap sound like?

Enquiring minds want to know.

I've never heard one on any MB. Working at Wal-Mart lube, I have seen a few cars come through with odd sounds. Some sound like a roller coaster's safty ratchet going up the frist hill, a long light chain dragging on the ground at 20mph, and like a risty bicycle with no chain oil.

I ask because, at highway speeds SWMBO's 300D has more of what I would label as 'top end' noise than my TD...don't you only hear chain slap at low speed?

It's kind of a whirring sound that, in my mind, sounds like a chain meshing. It's faintly reminiscent of the noise that my old Honda 600 car made when it was eating a timing chain.

Nevertheless, they both sound the same at idle...well, except for the rattle caused by the broken air cleaner mounts on the sedan.

Maybe it's about time to adjust the valves.... good excuse to get in there and take a look at things anyway.

A valve adjustment was done about 2500 miles ago. At the time, I documented about 6° of elongation but the car runs so doggone well I decided not use an offset key to bring it back to spec.

I'll think I'll open it anyway and check things out.

I wasn't sure if that was the one you put the offset key in or not. Hopefully the sound isn't some big deal but I think it's better to check it than to just let it slide.

Yes and No..

I put an offset key in my 300TD. This particular issue is related to the 300D I also have.

I went to an indy today to let him listen to the 'noise.'

I opened up the top-end last night and went through, checking all the valve clearances and inspecting the guides for wear. I found an intake and an exhaust that were loose; adjusted them and it took out the intermittent tick I was also hearing but did nothing for the whirring at 1800-2500rpm.

So, I went to an indy today to let them listen to Lilly's 'noise.'

Consensus is that I probably have slightly excessive valve clearance...this makes perfect sense to me because I use the 'closest' inch measurement feeler leaf instead of the exact metric leaf. Consequently, my valves are a shade on the'loose' side of things.

Chris says that it won't hurt anything but when they are loose you'll get that whirring noise.

I believe I'll invest in a pair of gin-yoo-wine feeler leaves of the proper metric thicknesses before the next session with these valves.
