My father had 463K miles on his transmission, and right now the tranmission is being used on another 300D after he parked the car and decided to strip it. My father did mostly highway driving, but he was brutal on the car around town. The tranny outlived the ENGINE! About 40 % in town, 60% on highway. Of course in town was never "stop and go" every hundred yards, either.

my tranny had a rebuilt around 150,000KM... and i just had the car for 3 months at that time!!... spent around $850 for the rebuild, including a planetary gearset to replace the worn out part that i had. But this was because i simply didnt stop fully when shifting from R to D. Suddenly i heard a sound *thug*.. then.. gears have gone bye bye!.. eversince the rebuild, (running 7,000KM now on a rebuilt tranny), i drive it hard when i get the chance to.. hopefully it would last a long time before i have another rebuild.. otherwise.. bye bye 4speed matic.. hello to 5-speed matic... (if i could find one here in the Philippines)

It's not broken so I won't mess with it. I miss the Twin-Turbine Hydra-Matic of my '63 Riviera. You could never ever feel any of the shifts in that transmission. It had smooth awesome power all the way to cruising speed plus I could get 16 MPG from it!

Should the OM606 engines also be run just as hard? Based upon research the OM606 in my '97 develops peak horsepower at redline. I've found that running between 70 - 90 with an average speed around 75 yields better fuel mileage than strictly city driving. When driving on the highway I tend to keep the RPM's at 3,000 exactly, no real purpose besides the needle pointing straight up

Redline on a 617
What is the redline rpm on an OM617A (turbo) engine? I have an aftermarket tach that has no "redline" marks.
Thanks, Steve |

I drive all my cars like I stole it, it's fun and healthy for the OM617!

more support for the pedal to the metal concept
I knew the 300D engine had some famous history.

I think you can do a search for the diesel redlines. But anyway I'll tell you.
The OM617 turbo redlines at around 5100 rpm. I wish Mercedes added redlines to the tachs of their old diesels, as it would be so much easier to tell. Don't worry, no matter how hard you push it in '2' or 'L', it shouldn't exceed its redline, as the fuel limit stop on the IP prevents it.

I recently took a video of my redline with my little digital camera (i still can't figure out how to post one here) and noticed my redline (no load) quickly peaks at 5500 and levels off to 5250. Loaded redline in L going up a steep hill is 5100. Would either these be too high?
