87 300d IP leaking What type of tool to get the bottom gasket off
Hello all,
I got my diesel all apart now ready for some surgery. I will let everyone know about all the mistakes after I am done but for now I have to get the bottom gasket off or tightened on the injector pump. What kind of tool do I need. I know that I may have to be creative to get acess to it but What type of bolt are they. It seems like a torx head but I am not sure. My allen keys are not fitting very well. I would rather do the job without removing the IP. Thanks again. bob c |

They're Torx head, and they're awfully tight, too. It's an O-ring for that bottom plate. I don't know if it's possible to replace with the pump on the car. I do know that when it comes loose, you'll get a small black oil bath! On my car, I pulled the pump off the engine and replaced ALL the gaskets on the whole silly pump - at least it's dry now.

Thank you,
I thought that they were torx heads but did not want to yank on them until I knew for sure. I am going to go to sears and see if they have a small ofset ratchet with a torx head insert to get that off. Now you say that this is a o ring. How big is it. I had my shop foreman friend send me the gaskets for the job along with a bunch of other stuff hopefully I got it. The one I am thinking of is about four inches around and fairly thin. I will try to get at it and if I am successful I will post a picture of the tool that I used. thanks again. bob |

Bob, the O-ring roughly 4 inches around is probably the right one, maybe 1/8-inch diameter. It may be sort of a square cross section instead of round, I forget exactly. Good luck!

Thanks for the help
I will post if I am sucessful All I can say is that this car is not as much fun to work on as the w123. Hopefully, after I get all the repairs done I will start liking this car. So far everything is a PITA. More to follow. thanks bob |

Bob,
It's funny you say that. I have owned several of each (see my sig below), and after working on them for 8+ years, I have to say the 124 is better designed, engineered, and thought out than the 123. Well, on MOST things anyway. You will need to invest a few bucks on special tools here & there (the fan clutch stuff tops the list), but IMO it's well worth it. I'm quite curious how your project turns out! I can say it's not a bad job at all if you pull the pump and re-seal it on the workbench. BT, DT! |

I looked at a 86 SDL the other day, and it also had a leak under th IP pump.
I do not know on this, but maybe pulling the engine mount (off the block) to get to the bottom of the IP pump? Just a thought. |

IP Leak
Are you sure that your leaks are not coming from the delivery valves? Sounds like it to me. If so they can be repaired on the car but it requires removing the intake manifold. They are sealed with an "o" ring and a copper seal ring for each valve. The 126 repair cd has a diagram. Be cautious. IPs are about a $Grand.

Fuel leak is more likely to be the delivery valves. Engine oil leak is probably the bottom plate/cover. I assumed we were talking about an oil leak - now I'm not sure. Bob?

Leaks
My bad. IP means fuel to me.

Hello,
Yes, I am refering to oil leaks. I assume that it is comming from the bottom seal as it accumulates oil there and I see no indication from the other seals. I will change it out hopefully over the weekend. I am optimistic that I can do it without taking it out. I will try and report back. I just hope that I stop braking things as I go. thanks again. bob c |

I pulled the IP from my 300D 2.5 turbo yesterday because of an oil leak issue. It's currently at a local IP shop for a re-seal - I would be amazed (and annoyed) if you are able to access the screws that hold the bottom plate to the pump body.
Please let us know how it goes... Tim |
