1985 300CD, 1987 300D or a 190D?
I'm trying to pinpoint the right MB diesel model to meet my needs. BTW, I have ran searches and have narrowed things down, but I need a few opinions. My main objectives include:
1] using Bio-diesel 2] good gas mileage 3] ease of maintenance (i'm a DIYer) which of these models 1985 300CD, 1987 300D or a 190D are going to best meet my objectives (assuming all other things are equal)? I currently own a '74 BMW 2002 tii (FS), but want to get away from using gas. BTW, i'm in No. CA --Thanx Cheers! |

85 or earlier
I went through the same decisions, and after a long search ended up with an '85 300D. It's got most of the same guts as the 300CD, including the iron head which you'll be happy to have. The '87 turbo is widely liked, but I want to run biodiesel and veg-oil and did not really want the alloy head as it cools a bit faster. With the choice open to me, I chose a w123 chassis because of the relative ease of maintenance.
My father in law has had a 190, and it's been nothing but a nightmare, though it still looks very nice... That CD will hold its value, and parts are very easy to get. Bio-dieseling in the stylish coupe! Cheers, Kevin

I have a 1983 300CD which I really like. I am particularly fond of the two door coupe style. However, if you are going to have more than two people in the car it is not very practical. The back seat have little to no leg room. I have a 5 and 6 year old and the complain about not having enough leg room. That is my only complaint.
