Round Heater Knob Broke Inside ?

On my 83 the Left heater knob spins very easily, It has no resistince like it did have and the heat is always on now.The right side one is okay you all know what I mean because The cold setting is when the arrow is points down and the cold is up , 180 Degree turn . Is this something that can be fixed or replaced?

This could be either a broken knob or a broken control valve. Pull both knobs off and compare the stubs sticking out of the control panel.

Actually, try the right knob on the left control and see what you get.

If I remember right from what I saw when I had the dash outa my 240D, there is a cable going from each knob to the double valve on the engine side of the fire wall. No vacuum to screw up anyway.

Thanks , I will check under the hood first, I also have to take the plastic panel apart because the liitle bulb that is in the heater knob has a broken electric socket and the wire got pulled thru the backside of this panel , so I will have to get behind thre also.
