Should I sell it?
I have an '85 300D turbo with nearly 220K miles on it. I have been stumped by a clicking noise in the engine which sounds like its getting louder but it could be that it only sounds that way when I sometimes drive with the radio off. Can't hear the click with the radio on. I have checked everything that I could within my expertise to locate this mystery noise with no luck. I haven't been able to locate a shop close enough to where I live that has enough knowledge of these cars. It otherwise still runs great and I honestly like this type of car. I am now at the point where I am frustrated enough that I am thinking about getting rid of this car.
What should I do? Some details about the car: Silver smoke metallic, a couple of very small dents, no sheetmetal rust-through, clear coat on hood nearly all gone. MB Tex interior, very good condition with no rips or tears. Sun roof. AC works great as well as everything else but the cruise control is a bit quirky. Nearly all service records from new. New front brakes with rotors New glow plugs. New inner lower control arm bushings and tie rod ends. Rectangular Euro headlamps, also have original US spec lamps. Ronal wheels and original alloy wheels with snow tires. This car is in very nice shape except for the bad clear coat on the hood, very clean interior and trunk. It is a little cranky in the mornings upon start up but warms up reasonably quickly. 1st to 2nd shift is a bit harsh when cold as well. My vote is no. If you sell it now, we'll probably never find out what caused the ticking sound if the engine ever fails.

You'll get next to nothing for the car with a noise coming out of the engine so why bother to sell it. I've solved this problem on several of my old English cars by just turning up the radio. When/if it gets worse you'll figure out what it is.

Can't hear the click with the radio on...
A CA car doesn't have the nasty air cleaner brackets that fail, they tend to click at idle when the metal fatigues and the rubber mounts break. So it must be something more "internal".
Oh I see it has an MTX audio system with monster cables . . . you must have quite a sound system in the car, huh? Tell you what, I'll just take it off your hands and replace the engine to get rid of the click (and hope it isn't the transmission). What do you want for it? Dieseldiehard |

I ran some Diesel Purge today for the heck of it to see if the click was related to the injection system. It wasn't, but it runs way smoother now and has lots more power. I'll see if the Purge made any improvement for my cold starts. I'll probably drive it until it quits and just part it out then. I'll be able to make more money off of it parting it out than I would by selling it now running.

I agree with a few of the others. Just keep driving with the radio playing your favorite tune.

That's exactly what I do. The sound system does a good job. I just watch the oil and temp gauges. Oil is pegged at 3 when driving and is between 1.75 to 2 at idle. Temp is at around 80 when fully warmed up.

Did you adjust the valves lately?
How about the timing chain? Don't forget the chain on the oilpump. I haven't seen alot of posts about that chain, I'm sure they do stretch to and might make a clicking noise. Louis. |
