oil leak in 300sd

well, that darn bodyart and his insanely clean engine pics prompted me to go out and clean my engine bay as best i could...i used a pressure washer and a lot of Purple Power and Gunk engine degreaser....i spent all day yesterday cleaning it up...and a while ago i popped the hood just to admire my handiwork....and ive sprung a leak!

forgive me for not knowing the correct terms for everything, but i hope youll be able to understand what im talking about...i noticed an oil leak on top of the oil pan...if you look down from the passenger side of the engine, you can see a tube running(from the engine?) down to the top of the oil pan....well,at the spot where that tube joins into the oil pan is where im leaking oil...its not a whole lot...hasnt even dripped on the ground yet,but its definitely leaking...is it just a seal that may have gone bad at the union of the tube and oil pan?

could someone elaborate on what this is,and how i might be able to fix this leak? thanks.....the car is an 85 300sd by the way...

dave

Sounds like the infamous turbo oil drain tube leak. Very, very common problem. Poor design, actually, that was fixed on later (OM60x series) turbo engines from 1986-up. Parts are cheap, but it will take probably 3-6 hours to repair. There are a couple different methods, my preferred method involves removing the turbocharger (easier than it sounds). Fun, huh?

Try searching this forum. I think there was a few threads in the past with details and/or photos. I may have saved something from the MBZ.org email list too, so if you can't find anything on here, let me know and I'll check my archives at home. It's really not THAT bad of a job, just annoying and messy. One good Saturday with all the parts in-hand and you'll be back in bizness.

i did a search here on this forum, and found a few things that may help....thanks for the quick reply,i appreciate it....

since you seem to be pretty educated on these engines,i have another unrelated question

theres a white plastic dial located by the inline fuel filter...appears to be going into the side of the IP...what does this dial do??

Actually I'm a lot more familiar with the aluminum-headed OM60x engines, but in this case, I think I know what the white dial is. That's the primer pump. You unscrew the knob, and then it will pump up & down to pump fuel up to the main filter. The pump is notorious for leaking once you touch it after years of non-use, so don't mess with it unless necessary. There's a new style primer pump now that cures the leak problem, so if yours starts dripping, a new one will cure that.

leak

That is a common place to have a leak - and mine has been replaced recently by my mechanic (the car was in for A/C work and I had them address this while in the shop).

Also, make sure the oil drain tube that runs up to the bottom of the air filter assembly is seated correctly. There should be a little o-ring on the bottom of the air-filter assembly (not sure how well it works), but it's easy to knock to one side when putting on the air filter assembly - say after replacing the mount or a bad insulator...

if it's not aligned and connected, oil will run down the tube and make a mess.....

yeah i got that drain tube connected....after messing with it for about 20 minutes, and getting pretty frustrated that it wouldnt go on by itself,i finally got about a 2 inch section of radiator hose and screw clamped it onto the bottom of the air filter housing...then i just stuck the tube into the bottom side of the hose...it seems to be working ok...but that was a major part of the oil on and around my engine,as it hadnt been connected in who knows how long
