trunk won't open

All,
The trunk is stuck on my 84 300d. The button will push in, but the trunk won't open. Have any of you seen this before? Please help.

Is it unlocked?
Are the doors unlocked? (that one got me on my SD)

Doors are unlocked

The doors are unlocked, and the button pushes in freely, but the trunk won't unlock. What type of trouble did you run into?

I'll trade you. Mine won't STAY open :p

I just got confused when I tried to open it with the doors locked. Kept trying to unlocking it at the trunk button. Then got a flash and went up and unlocked the drivers door. Prest-o! Trunk could then be opened.
Dunno. Maybe you've lost vacuum to the trunk actuator, and it's stuck in the locked position. See if anybody else has an idea on this one.

Does anyone know how to check if I lost vaccum to the trunk actuator?

Do a search on the phrase trunk won't open. On page three of the results is a 40-post thread from 2001 initiated by member Kelly Pepper called "82 300SD trunk won't open" Might make interesting reading.

Have you tried using the key? One of the keys opens the trunk even if the vacuum has not released it for pushbutton operation. Insert key, turn it (forgot which way) and push while the key is turned.

There is something strange about these trunk locks. There is a certain set of circumstances where you will have a devil of a time opening the trunk. Took me 1/2 hour fiddling with mine last summer to get it open. :( Seems it happened when the car was locked and I tried to just open the trunk using the key. Is that what happened to you? Now I only open the trunk after I unlock the car.....Good luck

The "Combination"

I have trouble opening the trunk when I forget the “combination” – insert key, turn counterclockwise, push in.

Is there a factory alarm on your car? My 1984 300SD has (had) an ELECTRIC actuator in the trunk lock as part of the factory alarm, in addition to the trunk vacuum actuator. Clicking the drivers door lock repeatedly with the key got mine to unstick and I could open the trunk. Once opened, I pulled the two prong connector to the electric actuator. This was ONLY part of the factory alarm system in my car and may not apply to the 300D 1984. FWIW.

I had similar situation about a year ago. Turned out my trunk vacuum actuator was bad. My trunk has electric lock plus vacuum lock. So I just disconnect the vacuum actuator. Now I can lock and unlock the trunk using the key for central locking system, but the trunk cannot be locked while driving by pressing down the driver side's door lock.

Now this is for the 240d, but do you have two different shaped keys.
Master key, square-headed key works on all the locks, Supplementary key, rounded-headed key works on just the door and steering lock.

Just a thought.

Did you try to unlock it using the key? In my 300D if you lock the trunk using the key it will not unlock again via the vacuum system until you reset the lock position by using the key.

Mike123 11-25-2003 08:00 PM

Toblin is exactly right. Nearly every time my daughter uses the key to open the trunk she accidentally locks it with the key and it must be unlocked again, with the key, in order for the vacuum actuator to unlock.

Let us know what you have found out.
