A ball valve is the logical/cheap answer.

Bump

for customer, 300D stolen - recovered.

The thief got two miles before abandoning the car, (because fuel filter was plugged).

Many years ago, someone in my high school drove a '60 Ponton with a mismatched hood & fender because some creep had managed to hotwire the car, but then learned that a 1960 Mercedes had a steering-lock, by plowing it into a tree!
I've only had the occasional small item stolen out of mine, pus a number of hood-stars, but check out my thread from a couple years back -
'The Sad Demise of Beirut Taxi'!

In 1991 my '77 240D was stolen. The starter was going out on it. It would constantly kick out and was very hard to start. According to my neighbor they were trying to start ot for about 10 min. It was at about 1 or 2 am as I recall. I worked strange hours so they thought nothing of it.

The police found it 4 or 5 days later. The front end (fenders, bumper, rad, euro lights ...) was gone. Wheels were gone (they put crap on to dump it). At the time it did not seem worth buying back and fixing. Kind of wish we did now but ......

My 240D is currently so difficult to start I'm not sure it could be stolen.

I keep my nice 240D at my parent's home - across the street from where my neighbor's 'Beirut Taxi' was stolen, so sometimes I worry a bit.
But I don't leave the keys laying around (sometimes in the car) like he did.

I'd guess if someone ever tried to steal my 240D I could give them a hours head start and then catch 'em at the end of the street

They definitely couldn't drive it off quietly, especially in the winter. My 85 300D was broken into in the driveway. All I noticed missing was a pair of prescription sunglasses. I didn't even notice at first. My neighbor's BMW had been broken into the same night, and I told them mine hadn't when they asked. Later, I noticed where a screwdriver had been pried under the door pull. It must be a trick they learn in prison to get into German cars.

I wouldn't expect much help from the police, especially in a big city. My Dart was stolen in Atlanta 20 years ago. The Mayor's Office kept sending a card every year saying they would "unfound" the crime, unless I responded that it was still stolen. Otherwise, they ASSumed my report was insurance fraud. One way mayors reduce the crime rate. Never found the car, but the Marietta police called 7 yrs later saying they found my license tag on a stolen Jetta.

Technically you can say I had one stolen, as after a big down turn in my life the landlord "donated" my euro, dart and mustang....

Partners parents attempted to steal the car I manage to rescue, though I haven't got the registration renewal yet, that is due next month....I got a duplicate of the pink in my dresser....

Then the police impounded this car, refusing to let my mother or grandfather take it away....so technically you could say it was stolen by them.......
