Firming up front seats on 300SD?
The front seats in my -85 300SD feels a little soft and wobbly to me.
How is the best way to firm them up a bit and how much would it cost me?? Sincerely Anders

I wouldn't mind if my seats in my 300D were a little softer. You probably have a broken seat spring and there are many posts on the subject in this forum that you can find by doing a search.

If you go to Alldata.com and plug in the specifics of your car you get a list of tsb's put out by Mercedes...
These are included in that list..they only give the titles free.... You could subscribe to Alldata... or you could find these bulletins somewhere else like the dealer and read them.... clearly you are not the first to complain about this... If you purchase a new bottom seat spring and install it you will wonder what took you so long. They changed the design and it makes all the difference in the world. The new springs are kinda pricey but in my opinion are worth every bit of it. Figure 2-3 hours to change it if you diy.

Thanks. I will first have my mechanic look at it. If he can do it and it is not too pricey, I will let him have a go...
Otherwiser I will have to do it myself. Where is the best place I can buy a new bottom seat spring if I decide to repair it myself? Sincerely Anders

Since you are in California, there shouldn't be a problem finding a new spring for your car. Off the top of my head I would suggest Tom Hanson at Caliber Motors in Anaheim Hills, or Performance Products in Van Nuys. I don't think "Fastlane" at the top of the screen has it available. Essentially you would be replacing the entire bottom of the seat. It is a DIYer job, and when you go to pull the seat out of the car, you will need help because these seats are heavy. These are not your ordinary aluminum tubing framed seats. The word here would be STEEL and alot of it.

Seat
The seat removal is really quite simple.....move the seat to the rear and you will need to remove 2-10mm bolts from the front of the seat, then you need to raise the seat as high as possible by pulling up on the side handle and maybe use a friend to push the seat toward the front of the car...once the seat is raised then move the seat forward as far as possible and you will have 2- 10 mm bolts at the rear of the seat rails to remove...then their is a additional bolt to remove from the seat guide that is bolted to the driveshaft tunnel just behind the front seat....push the seat guide all the way forward and you can pivot the seat 90 degrees and lift and pull it out the door. If you want extra room you can disconnect the door so it will open wider and or remove the door...My seat needs additional padding not springs...Jim
