Please explain this to me...
What is the difference between the "old style vacuum pump" and the "new style vacuum pump"? Anyone have any pictures of the two?

If you are referring to the OM60x aluminum-head engines used on all 1986 and newer MB diesels, the new style pump has a much more robust bearing assembly, and a cover that is crimped AND screwed on. Here's a photo of the new style. See those four Torx head screws on the front? If those are missing, that's an old style pump that should be changed immediately, regardless of age or miles.

I should have been more specific, sorry!
I guess I should have asked if there is a "newer" and "older" style vacuum pump for the w123 chasis diesels. I knew what I was talking about so I figured everybody knew. I get caught up in my own little world sometimes .

Ah! For OM61x engines, there are three different pump versions that I know of. But I'm not sure how to tell them apart. Guess you'll have to wait for someone to reply who's familiar with them...

I believe the early pump is a diaphragm pump and the later a piston pump. You can tell the difference by the fact that with the early pump there is a clear hose going from the pump to the air cleaner. The later pump has no hose going to the air cleaner.

Tell me this,
Can I use the piston type pump('82 240D) on a 1980 300D with the "clear hose into air cleaner" instead? How would that work? Okay?
