Need 1982 300D Windshield help

Anyone know how much a "good used" front windshield for an '82 300D would (should) be? Or where a good source to find one might be? Has anyone bought a new one lately, that might know the ball-park-price of one? I can't find anything around my area. Can these things be shipped for a decent price?

Thanks! Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Used? I imagine it isn't really worth the trouble unless you're going to get it and install it yourself...

I got a quote for a new windshield from my 300TD the other day; the glass and installation (and removal of the old one of course) came out to $225. That doesn't include a new windshield seal though...

Been there, done that. Got the new new glass.

Take the advice of a rabid DIYer: take it to Harmon or some other auto glass outfit and have them do it for you with new glass. Trying to pull one of these windows at home just isn't worth the hassle. Make sure you put a new gasket on too...just don't buy it from Benzbaron or Bigbabbo on eBay.

One caveat: make sure the glass techs understand that the metal trim surrounding the glass comes out WITH the glass/gasket assy and not pried out with WMDs beforehand. Same way with the install, the gasket goes on the glass then the trim goes in the gasket and then the whole shebang gets installed. Installing the trim in any other way will hose the stuff and it will look like crap foreverafter.

Just ask them beforehand how the trim comes out. If they don't answer correctly, go somewhere else.

Be prepared, you may encounter rust (sometimes really bad rust see here: The rust worm has a hold of Lilly!) under the gasket along the pinch weld that holds the inner and outer body panels together and you may want to rectify these issues at the same time.

Thanks; where can I buy it?

Very helpful information! You guys have convinced me to have it done by a professional, but now I'm wondering, is there a source other than Mercedes dealer that can supply the glass for less? Or can my local glass shop get a decent price on one? Thanks for the help!

Stealership glass not necessary

After I broke the front windshield in SWMBO's 300D, I called around and found that, here in Austin, Harmon Auto Glass had the best price and answered all the trick trim questions correctly.

My bill was $316 which included:
1) Remove broken front glass, install customer-supplied gasket on new glass (from Harmon) and install in car.
2) Remove rear glass and install customer-supplied gasket. Reinstall glass in car.

Prior to going to Harmon, I had already removed the reveal mouldings in the front and back. They reinstalled everything but the front one over the visors because I had left it at home. One complaint: they forgot to reconnect the rear defogger after they put the glass back. Irritating, but no biggie...probably distracted by the über cute 22 year old that came in after me to get her mirror fixed (made me feel ancient...turned out she went to high school with my son!!!).

Jeeze.

Thanks R Leo

I'm getting a pretty good idea now about the cost and the problems to watch out for. Thanks for your time and information.

I'm still curious if anyone knows a source that may have windshields in stock, other than the dealership, where the cost might be less. Or, do you suppose the local auto glass shop can get a decent price on his own.

Car-Part would be used. The local glass shop should be able to get a new front windshield at a decent price with no problem. The rear windshield is a different story.

However, do not let the glass shop supply the seal. OEM only on that part! Notice this is exactly what R Leo did - you supply the seal and they supply the glass.
