Another heater question.190D
I have a 1987 190D 2.5 turbo. Probably the same blower/heater as all other 190Ds.
I have replaced the aux. coolant pump (siezed) and the climate control mother board (fried). And now have heat...thank God, this forums archives, and PartShop. But...though the footwell heat is certainly adequate the flow of air to the feet area is markedly less than to the defroster and side vents. Lets see if I can describe it. When I put my hand down by my feet I feel about as much airflow as when I put my hand 10 inches in front of my fully open mouth and exhale strongly. This is in contrast to the defroster and vents which are equal to when I purse my lips and blow as if trying to whistle. OK..I can hear you laughing at me now...but anyone in the room with you just saw you blow into your hand like you were checking for bad breath. So we are even so far. My question is should the airflow into the footwells be as strong as to the defroster ducts...or is the much weaker airflow to my feet "normal". I don't mind tearing into my dash/etc to get the heat to work as good as new..but fixing something that "aint broke" is just a waste of time...or worse. I suspect Mercedes designed the footwell vents to provide an excess of heat when working properly...but want to make certain. I have seen in the archives that a vacuum actuator controls the footwell vents in other models...can any 190 owners confirm that this is the case with the 201 models? And if anyone has fixed this "problem" in a 201..would they care to provide some guidance? In any case..I will owe you. Thanks!!!

I've owned W123, W201, W124 and W210. None of them blew hurricane force winds at my feet.
You have to realize that there are ducts under the front seats directing air to the rear floor area. So the airflow is shared with them. Yes, it's vacuum controlled.

I think what you are describing is normal. I have a 190D-2.2, and there is some airflow to the footwells, but not nearly as much as what comes out the vents.
Now a question for you - do you get a loud bang whenever the actuators close/open the flaps to turn on airflow to the footwells? Whenever I turn the 'foot' setting on or off, I can hear the flaps loudly slam shut. If it's fixable, I'll fix it, but if it's normal, then I'll leave it... None of the other airflow settings result in any noises.

I get no loud "bang" when I press the button directing more heat downward. In fact no sound at all that I notice. I suspect maybe I should if it is normal...but cant say if mine is or yours is...normal that is.
Like I say the flow I get to the footwells is more of a gentle breeze rather than a "blowing" as from a fan.

Here's your quote of the day: "A Mercedes-Benz should never make a loud bang."

Mine would make kind of a slap sound right after I started it, but I wouldn't call it a bang. I assumed it was the driver side floor vent door slamming shut. Since it would never blow any air out, I just stuck a small dowel in it to hold it open and now I have pretty good air flow to the floor. I haven't heard the noise since I blocked the door open. Passenger side always did work okay and still does, but all the rear gets is cold air. My dream is to someday have the whole works controlled by simple switches and choke cables, but that is more engineering than I think I want at this point.
