1985 300tdt oil burning?????

Just got this car back from the shop, reason being the head gasket blew. While they had the head off I thought it would be a good idea to replace the valve stem seals, ( some whiffs of blue smoke at idle, barely noticable) upon closer inspection the guides were also suspect, so I figured why not just rebuild the head valve job et all. So I did. Replaced three valves. Seats etc.
Now the car runs smoother seems to have more power especially mid range. Car has 210,000 miles, has always had regular maintence. Problem now is the blue smoke has increased rather dramatically at idle , I also swithched to DELVAC 1 , had been using Mobil1, my plan is to drive the car about 1000 miles or so to see if the problem self mitagates, the compression is good across the board, always starts when very cold( down to -10 with no preheat) Very frustrating any insights?????
Thanks
Ron

Make sure the oil drain for the separator in the air filter housing isn't plugged, and that the separator itself isn't leaking -- if the drain is plugged, oil will collect in the separator until it's blown down the intake. Wasteful, it works better as lubricant than as fuel.

Also, it is probably time for turbo seals -- check the turbo by pulling the intake pipe and rotating the wheel by hand, engine off, please. If there are rough spots or any binding, or any significant fore-to-aft movement, the bearings are gone and so are the seals. Rear seal leak will cause oil to run into the exhaust, makes blue smoke without going through the engine at all.

It takes LOTS of oil to make blue smoke if it goes down the intake!

Thanks

Thanks PSFRED,
I am somewhat at a loss because the engine prior to the work had just a faint whiff of blue smoke at idle, now especially when cold lots of blue smoke seems to mitigate somewhat as the engine warms. Could the change of oil weight from 15-50 Mobil 1 to the Delvac1 5-40 contribute ? Really the only variable other than the head work. I will definatly take your advise on the other possibilities, Thanks
Ron

Blue smoke

PSFRED,
just one more thing, there does not seem to be any blue smoke under load, some black, maybe a little overfueled, but the blue smoke seems to be only at idle?????
Thanks,
Ron

Ron:

Severa thoughts:

Oil smoke at idle sounds exactly like a ruptured vac pump diaphram pumping it into the intake. Sadly for this scenario, your's doesn't exhaust to the intake but to the chain case, so that isn't it.

Lower viscosity oil will make leaks much worse cold.

Leaking turbo seals won't necessarily get worse under load. If it's not real bad, the oil will burn off more or less smokeless except when the exhaust is fairly cool (idle).

Worst case is that the engine was badly overheated sometime or another and the oil control rings are annealed -- they won't spring out against the cylinder walls properly and will get too much oil past.

Last thought -- how much clearance did the shop put in the valve guides? MB guides are TIGHT be typcial American standards, and most shops have to be restrained from reaming them out to give several thousandtsh of an ich clearance. Instant oil consumption, as when BM guides have a couple thousandths clearance, they are worn out. I've heard of this many time.

blue smoke at idle

PSFRED, thanks again
I thought I would drive the car 1000 miles or so to see if there is any mitagation, I have heard stories of Delvac 1 improving compression and consumption, I guess by cleaning the deposits from the rings, when I heard it or read it I thought it was probally bad science but I am willing to give it a try. My tech whose opinion I respect (has been working on my cars for over 25 years) seems to think the lower end is tired. The car performs very well, has excellent oil pressure at idle RPM, starts easily down to-10f, and I live at 7300ft above sea level. No bad noises etc, Iwill take a look at the turbo seals and go back to Mobil 1 15-50 at the next oil change to see if that helps, If it does not I quess the question is despite years of meticulus maintence I am faced with either living with the blue smoke or a lower end rebuild, or complete rebuild. My tech knows how particular I am about my cars and suggested a factory rebuilt complete engine but they are no longer available. Money in money out I guess I will cost the options. Thanks for your advise I really do appreciate it.
