You are going to want a crowbar and hefty hammer to break the old ones free - i have done three and all were sticky.
I don't think the drive shaft will telescope much unless you loosen the mounts on the carrier bearing - the mounts are slotted so you might not have to remove the bolts, just loosen so it can slide back and forth.

Thanks for the advice! I have no trouble in being able to jack the car up and put it on jack-stands. I have an assortment of hammers and prybars as well. My concern now is how much room will I have underneath to get a good swing with a hammer and is there anything else I should be careful with and not accidently ruin in the process. I'd hate to get in the middle of the job and end up needing to replace something else and have the car out of service for a week or two waiting for the part or even worse, to have to tow the car to my local mechanic to fix something I won't have the tools for.

It will be more of a prying process if yours is anything like what I have seen. I did not need lots of room to swing a hammer.

Fundamental question: Where exactly are the mounts on the carrier bearing? If I'm under the car (in a pit) looking toward the front? Or looking toward the back? What does a carrier bearing look like?

I'm not positive but I believe the carrier bearing they are talking about is the support in the middle, it looks like this.

The item you are talking about should look like a donut placed on your driveshaft.... a short driveshaft up front then this thing and then a longer shaft... and a few bolts go up to the car to hold it on.

Question upgrading to turbo flex disk???

I have read that upgrading to a turbo flex disk is the best use of insurance and reliability in the hp department. does anyone know anything about the capatability of this information. My car has about 270 hp and i want the strongest unit possible (ive had no problems in the past-just check with normal maintance).
thanks alot and good day - jake

Um I'd like to see that dyno printout on your car BF_JC, you must have done something right to get 270hp. Care to share any power secrets?

Jake's profile lists a 1980 Euro 230 - W123. That's a seriously modded 2.3 liter engine to push 270 hp!

wow you guys are fast over here

Hello
Yes i am gas powered, i am over here because i like to read all i can on w123 cars. the car is running a modern ford engine with a eaton m-90 and a three core intercooler, rack and pinion steering in the works, ect... but my one concern is the flex disk, as my front unit uses a american universal.
sorry if this is unconventional or unacceptable to any of you, but thats my deal. just looking for/to share information. -take care - jake

Some of us have nothing better to do than hang out here all day.

Regarding the flex disc, I'd say you need the turbo version. At least!!
