Well, the engine comes out TODAY!
As soon as I get the driveshaft disconnected the 4cyl. will be out and on the table. She died week before last or at least developed a bad miss and now will not start. Blow-by has been EXCESSIVE and oil consumption was at 200 miles per quart!
I have the 5cyl. ready to go in and with a few minor technicalities here and there I hope to have her back on the road right before Christmas. Merry Christmas to me! I am still debating on whether or not to put in the 4-speed manual I bought last week or just drive the soup out of this automatic I JUST bought for the 240D four months ago. Well, at least I will have the 4-speed if I decide to change my mind. Wish me luck! Kevin |

Oilslick,
I am in the same boat you are in. My engine is using a tremendous amount of oil and I am afraid she is going to throw something really soon. I have to hold the fuel pedal to the floor when I start her up. Once she turns over and catches, huge clouds of smoke come rolling out of the tailpipe and she runs rough for the first couple of minutes. I have to keep the pedal to the floor for the first minute of start-up. On top of all of this, on the way home tonight, I heard an odd noise coming from the rear end of the car. Once I got home, I climbed underneath and discovered that the passenger side inner axle boot was completely gone. I am hoping that the awful noise is just the axle and not the rear-end. I too have a 240D engine in this one even though it started out it's life with a 300D engine. The rear end is original to the car (300D). My question for you is whether or not the 4 speed manual tranny will bolt right up to the 300D engine, or do you have to modify it? I am looking to put a 300D turbo engine back in this one and want to know what all this is giong to entail. I am planning to do this work myself. I am confident I can tackle this project. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Mike

I think...
If you already have a manual tranny then you should everything you will need for your project as far as I know. I am an amature at this kind of stuff! From what I have gathered the following is what you need to pay close attention to.
Flywheel & adapter plate? Driveshaft I believe I have read somrthing on this forum about the pilot bearing being a booger. Not quite sure about that. Not to sound rude but try searching for threads containing some of the items like "driveshaft", "adapter plate", "manual trans"- stuff like that. I really wish I could be more help but I am getting an education on my car and I happen to be one of those "stupid people". Kevin |

I'll tell you what, I'll let you tackle this project over Christmas and then I'll ask you how it went. Not to sound mean, but it's better to let someone else go through this and then learn from their experience.
In all seriousness, I will do a search as you suggested. I did this about a week ago but was searching under different topics. I hope all goes well for you. Let us know how it all turns out. Mike
