should i buy one or get all three?

the air cleaner housing in my 240d is rattling. i found out that the 240 has no mounting bracket? it just has the 3 rubber mounts. is that right?
it is unlikely that all the three rubber mounts have failed.
should i go ahead and change all three even if say, just one is bad. or should i just replace them all. what do you think?

no more patients today! whew.

Honestly... I dont know for sure the answer but my inclination is your cant buy just one of the rubber feet. I figure they come in a set of three.

If so.... might as well switch them all out cause the others are bound to fail soon too since they are all of the same age and brittleness.

You can purchase them one at a time. Just purchase what you need. It is my experience that when you lose one the others are not too far behind.

$1.83 each on Fastlane - go ahead and spring for all three. (I hope PEH isn't watching)

keep a few spares on hand so when the next one breaks, and it will, you won't have to wait to silence the noise.

but, (PEH you're out there i know , watching us) you don't need to replace the ones that are still working.

My opinion on the matter, for what it is worth, is to replace them all at once. It is almost guaranteed that if you only do one, you will be pulling that baby apart again within weeks to do another one or two...Murphy's Law. I hate getting all oily and greasy so I like to do everything at once. I know others say to only do what is needed, but they may have more time on their hands than me. I have a wife who has a honey do list a mile long and nothing pertaining to my car or hers is on that list.

PEH will yell loudly but I agree that it's best to replace all 3 in one fell swoop. If the ones on your car don't have the metal heat shields, it'd be worthwhile to get those as well.

Also, especially since you'll have to pay shipping, it'd probably be worthwhile to get an extra set or two...maybe they're different on the 616, but on the 617, they go somewhat regularly... There are some on here who devised a different air intake to eliminate these parts (and others), due to the issues on the 617 (they go onto a bracket, and the bracket breaks often). Take a look at a thread called "Air Cleaner Mod", started by Dieselhead...it's an older thread, but was recently brought up to the top, so it's probably within the last 5 pages.

Hope that helps some...good luck!

Might just make a list of everything you're going to need for a while (oil/fuel filters, etc) and go ahead and get it all at once to save on shipping.

"I hate getting all oily and greasy so I like to do everything at once."---sublettm

I see this as a call for my recipe for cheap engine cleaning solution...

One gallon can of concentrate Gunk engine cleaner
Four gallons kerosene...

store in air tight container...

will last a long time if kept from moisture.

I think we should all send PEH our old "prematurely replaced, still good" rubbers when we get new ones....he would have a lifetime supply real quick.....

My engines are relatively clean, but no matter what project you tackle on one of these beasts, you are going to get a little grungy. I don't profess that you can eat off my engine, but I do take the time to wax the painted areas under my hood and keep the engine area free of dirt and grime.

You could save $5.49 plus shipping and do what I did. I used bolts and some shock bushings on my 617. Then again, if my car was nice enough to wax under the hood I would'nt have done that.
