Well rickg it's the only car that I really like that I can afford now. I would trade it in a seconed for an S600 or E55, or better yet keep the diesel as a weekend cruiser/winter car. Also being 18 insurance is to high on Mustangs, so no 5.0

That's funny...I've wanted nothing else except a diesel since I was 14 or so. The only reason my first two cars were g@$$ers was that they were given to me, and both of them together lasted me less than a year (one blew up after 2 months, and the other became a $$ pit)...after that year, my wish came true and my fleet's been all diesel all the time ever since

another post time warp here

Of course diesels in cars in my time were limited to Mercedes, and I wasn't around any back then(early 70's). So I suppose had I been exposed to them, I may have seen what great vehicles they were. The first exposure I had was when GM started putting their ill fated V-8 diesels in cars in the late 70's. That was enough to convince me what a mistake it was to put a diesel engine in a car

My very first car

Was a 1949 Studebaker Champion with a mere 39K miles on it, owned by two 70 year old ladies that were giving up driving. It cost $150.

It would do 70 mph downhill in a tailwind.

My primary vehicle now is the 85 300TD.

I have also owned a Hudson (a most rare 54 convertible), and three, yes THREE Renaults: one Dauphine, one R-10 and one R-16.

I wasn't allowed to have my own car until I really needed one, meaning after college. I suffered in high school, driving Mom's station wagon, but I did get to drive our Montreal, Fiat 124 (yikes) and Saab 9000. Even though we could afford a 5th car, old Dad would have never wanted his kid to be seen in an MB. He's a real low-key guy.

Once I got done with schooling (well I'm still at it actually) I bought an '87 Civic Wagon with "Real-Time AWD". Came in handy when living in Wash D.C. 3" of ice and snow would cripple most driver's, but being a MN native and having that handy AWD got me around when everyone else would pull over to the side on "the beltway". Decent car, but the clutch went out and cost me $600 in '92 for a rebuilt unit. Kept it for a year, then bought a real money pit; '90 Saab 900S.

First Car

1969 Simca . This is where I first learned to hate the French.

1972 Cheverlot Monte Carlo; First I bought myself.

Feel in love with MB in 1981 drove 240D
Fell in love again in 1987 drove a 1985 300TD

1995 E300D, the best of a breed in the US but I really wanted a 5 speed with turbo. Now I am thinking of a major conversion of this car to what I really wanted in the first place.

My first car was a dull cavalier, not a single feature, simple, got great mileage, but just lacked something so I rid of that. I went out and bought a grand prix with every feature, nice but got alright mileage and cost way to much for the use I got out of it. All this time I always wanted to get a Eagle Talon, well right after graduating high school I got that and eventually sold the grand prix in search of something completely different, something that gets good mileage and runs forever, a diesel, a mercedes diesel. Then came my 84 & 83. Three cars were a bit much so I ended up selling the 84 after the auction on my 83 fell through, so now instead of having a fixer upper benz I have one nearly perfect. Oh and btw my parents and every person I knew thought my buying a diesel, let alone some old Mercedes with 267k miles and on top of that flying 900 miles to pick it up that I was just insane. A few days after having the 84 home my family realized it wasn't such a bad idea.... So they are/were my fourth and fifth vehicles.

I'd love a dauphine as a weekend toy or maybe a conversation piece on the coffee table

My first car was a 1984 300D, gold on palomino. Bought it with 102K on the odometer, from its original owner. I drove it through highschool. I sold it the summer after my senior year, with 142K on the odometer. ( I did quite a bit of driving!)
That same summer I purchased an 85 300DT with 145K miles, in midnight blue with parchment. I left it at my friends house in San Rafael one weekend, unable to drive it home due to my ignorance to change the drive belts on time. they broke. Her friend (a mbz mechanic) had access to parts and tools, so he replaced the belts and got it running, and my friend proceeded to drive it back to my house. Along the way somthing had fallen from a truck in front of her, and unable to avoid it drove directly over it, tearing up the whole suspension. Car was totalled and I went on a search to find a replacement, which is what i now drive.
My current car is a 1984 300DT, 157K (bought at 145K) in orient red with the palomino interior. Flew to San Diego to pick it up, drove it back home to the bay area, and its been a great car ever since. I hope I wont have to part with this one for a while.
See pics at the link in my profile!

My first car was a 1963 VW Bug that I got for $600. It was ok, except that it was always requiring attention, so I drove our 1984 Vanagon a lot, which was a fantastic car. We sold the van to get the 240D, which I shall never part with!! I am definately a died-in-the-wool Benz guy now, who dabbles in VW.

I got the same reaction when I told people I was flying out to Texas to pick up a car with 223K miles on the odometer. However, the gamble paid off exceptionally well, to the point where a friend of mine followed suit a week ago...

The funny thing is that it's not M-B that got me turned on to diesels. It was a combination of marine diesels (courtesy of the Scout unit that I'm with; mainly Screamin' Jimmys) and the Dodge Cummins' reputation. I came close to getting a '93 D-250 Cummins to replace my vah before I decided I couldn't afford the fuel and registration, so I decided to get the M-B instead (VW's get better mileage, but I hate aluminum heads)...

My first car was a Teal Blue 74 MGB that I bought in college. It taught me all I know about auto repair. When it ran it was pure delight. Sunny days were sensory overload for me and many assorted passengers. After fifteen years I no longer had time to attend to it and sold it for twice what I paid. That side of my brain is still on the lookout for a nice TR3, MGA or Elan to compliment the reliabilty of the diesel MB's and Civic.

1st car, 1965 Volkswagem Squareback 1500S. Pancake engine, 2 carbs, what I didn't do with that car!!!!

Favorite car, 1987 300D. Comfortable, fast, economical, and a Benz!

Feel very privileged that I was able to buy my son his first car, a 1982 300D from a forum member. He loves it.

There still isn't anyone that I know who've been influenced enough to buy a diesel but my dad almost bought (highest bid on an auction or two but the seller ended it in the last few seconds) a MB for my mom, while that sounds insignificant he works at GM. Every vehicle he has ever owned was from the big three, almost all were GM. Oh and he ended up buying a buick locally. :-/
