What types of manuals to get?

Hello, I'm still looking for a diesel 240 manual, 300D or 300SD in the 1980-1985 range. I bought the ************** manual on diesel performance but I've seen service manuals on ebay, both hard-copy mercedes manuals and CDs and also haynes. Just wondering if you guys had any recommendations or just buy them all. Thanks for your time and input.

I like the Haynes manual for some of the pictures... but it leaves some things out totally...
So you also need the Factory shop manuals... and I really prefer the paper ones.... random access is faster... LOL
Here is what I have picked up so far....

1. 123 chassis manual vol 1
2. 123 chassis manual vol 2
3. 616 engine manual
4. 123 heating,ac and climate control manual
5. 123 electrical manual ( I think it has the vacuum routing also)
6. 123 manual trans overhaul manual
7. maintenance manual 123

8. engine manual 617.952 turbo
9. engine manual 110 gas

The official MB manuals are not very easy to read... but they have all sorts of info not in the Haynes manual.

I don't know why you'd want a 300SD manual, that is a different chassis car. Out of those I would take the printed factory manual hands down, I have all three manuals but don't use the chilton's at all. I have the haynes in the garage, just for torque values. Most of the time I have to get them from the factory CD manual though. Those can be found cheap but the printed version would be so much better.

I guess you got me back leathermang, one minute.

You can sample the CD Manual by clicking the link below............the whole CD can be downloaded to your hard drive using a program like Webzip (Google search will find it).....then burn your own CD
Disk1 covers w123.........Disk 2 is for the 300D

Link to online 300D Manual

That's a lot of stuff to download. If you want the CD, there are often lots of guys selling them on eBay. I got mine for $10.

I'd like to get my own hard copies but they've always gone over $50 for each volume on eBay every time I've bid on them. I don't want to pay more than $50 for both books and they'd have to be in like new condition at that price.

Homeka, if you want something reaallly basic and user friendly that you can hold in one hand while turning wrench with the other..... then the Chilton is tough to beat for simple explanations, lotsa pics and easy readability.

Haynes is more technical and takes alot for granted, but is far less easy to read say, sittin on the crapper or while watching tv.

Workin on my own MB's for 3 generations of cars that include 111's, 114's and 123..... the Chilton is all I've ever needed to see me through pulling cylinder heads, swapping camshafts, replacing starters, alternators, subframe mounts and other simple DIY repairs.

However, when dealing with 20 yr. old car you might want to bag any manual you can get.... i donno if Chilton and Haynes continue printing repair manuals on older cars after 20 yrs.

I went to that site and it seems all that they have are manuals for cameras. It might be useful someday.

I checked manuals4less2you.com and they seemed a bit high but then I make my own copper wire from pennies.
Thanks for the correction.
