1983 240D trans replace--How do I get the Drive shaft back on??

I know the driveshaft came off easily. I cant get it Back on. I havethe Car on jackstands and the transmission back in. I know the Driveshaft has a Big nut about 33% of the way down, and I vaguely remember unscrewing the 2 parts of the driveshaft about 4 years ago, but the the Driveshaft wont come apart this time.

How do I get the driveshaft back in? Its cold and raining and I need this car by Xmas!!

Mine slipped in pretty easy. Where are you experiencing difficulty?

a. Engine end
b. Middle area with carrier mount
c. Differential end

I do remember a bit of a challenge sliding the honkin thing through the carrier mount in the middle.

Diesel Don, did you seperate the two parts?

Diesel Don, did you seperate the two parts of the shaft, or put it back on in one piece which I think can be done if you work the Rubber couplings at each half with a Pry bar?

Mine went back on pretty easily when I changed out my clutch a couple of months ago. I didn't even have to loosen the big nut in the middle. I just pried it back to get it off & it stayed there when I put it back on & I slipped it back where it belonged. Hopefully yours is the same way.
So did you end up rebuilding the trans or did you find a new/replacement one?

I rebuilt the transmission..
