Here's a poll I thought might be neat.

Bought my first one because there was a need. Bought the second one so the wife would give me back the first one. Bought the 3rd one to strip for parts. Already thinking about the 4th one. I did not expect to turn this into another hobby.
Is it a hobby, or an addiction? Jerry

Reason(s)? All of the above.
I'm on my 3rd Benz diesel, and would like another. I like 'em. Built like a tank. Easy to work on Built like a tank Don't blend in with all the other stuff on the road Built like a tank. Comfortable. Built like a tank. Good fuel mileage oh, and one more thing I like....built like a tank.

I bought my 300D because I wanted to get a mid sized car that was both economical and cheap to buy. This was when gas prices hit an all time high. I was always under the impression that diesels were long lasting. I kept several makes in mind within a spending limit. Nothing too much came up other than a few M-B diesels and a Volvo. I looked at the Volvo and it was a POS. The next car I looked was the 300D that I bought. It was way better than the Volvo for the same amount of money. I made the guy an offer and he took it. I never did any research on this car. I really didn't know exactly what I was getting into other than the car had an excellent service history from new. It wasn't perfect but for the money I wasn't expecting more anyway. I figured this car should last me at least another 50K miles. It was a pleasant surprise to read in this forum that they can last way longer than I imagined. I always wanted to someday get a M-B and with this car I finally did it. I only bought this car as a temporary addition but now I'm hooked.

I have 3 diesels and obviously it's an addiction, because who needs 3 MB diesels? Well, I do! I love my Benzes because I love the older MB styling, and the durability, sound and efficiency of the MB diesel engines. In my opinion today's Mercedes doesn't look as prestigious and unique as the older models do.

I'm hooked. Bought my first one for $200,installed battery, cleaned fuel filter and drove it home! Bought the second SD for parts, now working on my 3rd. Oh! my OL Lady wouldn't let me sell it if I wanted to.
Cheapest, most economical transportation I have ever owned.

I keep it for longevity and a great daily driver, but I bought it for all the things RickG stated plus I think it is built like a tank. It also gets great mileage on cheaper fuel which pollutes less, isn't just your average car, while my MBs were my first sedans it is also nice in tighter than preferable parking spots where in my talon I could barely get it open that first notch. I didn't buy it for that nice chromed star, I bought it for what that star meant back in the 80s, quality.

It's nostalgic for me and I just love these cars. As a very young boy in the '60s, many times I've discharged the battery of our '54 Cadillac deVille (got some spanking for that) and turning the choke knob on our MB 180D so it will cruise without the driver's foot on the accelerator pedal (sort of a cruise control)

I chose this one BECAUSE it had many problems that I could fix as I go along for my Diesel tech studies, but still have a drivable car. It has been a better source of knowledge (With help from everyone here) than any book or video has ever been.
I had planned for this to be just a "learn, fix, and sell" car, little did I know how much I would grow to LOVE my 300TD in such a short time. I can't stand the idea of anyone but me in the drivers seat anymore |

Require a proper smog check of every pollution emitting vehicle in the country or none at all. Until then, my top 10 reasons include no smog check for Diesels in California.
