is this an ominous sign?
After taking a cruise, I pulled into the driveway and noticed smoke and a burning oil smell coming from under the hood. The engine temp and oil pressure were fine. I opened the hood and saw oil leaking out of the oil filler cap and dripping onto the manifolds and injectors. Also, the oil seperator tube from the air filter to the return tube seperated and dripped onto the turbo (the smoke). Is there too much internal pressure in my engine? The breather tube didn't seem to be blocked. I didn't lose very much oil, but am concerned that my blowby situation is out of control. There is a lot of smoke that comes out of the oil filler while running. I did the "block the breather tube shutdown test" and it takes 14 seconds to kill the engine. Could this just be the filler cap?
If you haven't noticed I'm paranoid about my engine! P/S what's so special about the rack dampener pin? How can it wear out? And last, why the hell is it so friggin expensive? |

Filler cap gasket is a common problem ,I think you can just buy the gasket...........

In addition to the gasket...
Get in the habit of NOT turning the cap upside down when you have it off the valve cover... oil will then run out when you put it back on... |

hotskillet,
In addition to the deterioration of the cap gasket, the little elbows made of rubber that the oil separator tube fell out of get old and loose. They will fall out from engine vibration after a while and need to be replaced. I believe FastLane has them for a few dollars. Good luck, Jim

The last owner of my TD used the fuel tank cap as the oil cap and stuffed a shop rag in the tube as a fuel cap. Since I had not seen an MB diesel engine bay yet, I did not figure this out until I got found an SD in the scrapyard to swap with.
I have thought about using the tank cap from the SD as an "oil" cap again since it looks so much better than the cheap looking plastic oil cap. |
