diesel backfire

My 1990 350 sdl with 145,000 miles backfires one time when it is cold a few seconds after it starts. Just started doing this and does it every time. Head and pump replaced @ 100,000 miles.

Help or my wife will stop driving.

My 300SD stumbles for a few seconds when started up cold. It's been like that forever. I'm not worried about it. If you have a real big boom type backfire it's a different story. How bad is it??

backfire

Misses for a few minutes and pumps dark exhaust. Backfires one time then clears as it is driven a few miles. I have had gasoline engines backfire for eing lean, cracked head or burnt/broken valve but a diesel cannot run lean in th intake manifold or can it?

I can only think that there may be a valve that may be sticking open sometimes. I broke an exhaust rocker arm on a Datsun diesel that I used to have. It happened to me while going to work. It still ran but it was backfiring back into intake. Ran like heck and was real loud but I was still able to limp back home at freeway speeds.

I'd try running some diesel purge through it. When was the last time it had an Italian tune up?
