When I said "free-wheeling" I meant that the fan is still rotating and drawing air through the radiator. Of course if it's not even doing that then it's useless.

HOW TO KNOW THAT VISCOUS FAN CLUTH IS OUIT OF SERVICE
Thanks for this important Threadid.
I fell that the fans clutchs on my 190 E, 2.6L, 1988 and 300E 1988 did´nt work OK. I dont see changes in the fan clutch revolution where engine temperature is over100ēC. The outside temperature in VEnezuela, is always over 30ēC., the auxiliary fan change to a high velocity in traffic when temperature is over 100ēC. But we don´t fell any change in the fan clutch. Please how to check the fan clutch? How to service them? How to add viscous oil TOYOTA 6000 cps.? Thanks. MaRIO fARIAS laprefar@cantv.net

Mario,
------------------------------------------------ Run the engine at 4000-4500 rpm's... When a coolant temp of 90 to 95 C is attained, the fan speed should increase by approx. 1000 rpm, which can be clearly noticed accoustically . ( You can hear the change in speed of the fan ) A defective coupling cannot be repaired with workshop equipment, and a new coupling should be installed. Temperature controlled Viscofan couplings should be transported and stored vertically. For short periods , eg, during assemble--the coupling may rest on a flange, but never on the front end. ____________________________ that is almost verbatim from the manual... with clean up for English speakers....
