Manifold Gasket or Goop??
Decided to remove the VERY gunked-up manifold and have it boiled out (will be waiting for a new link for the timing chain to arrive anyway).
It appears there was no gasket for the intake OR the exhaust on this, just manifold to head. So.... Anyone just used hi-temp sealer (ultra-xxx) on manifolds and called it good, or use an actual gasket? '84 617.952

By all means, use a gasket. If you have an oil leak at the valve cover, it will act as a channel guide it away from them. Without it, you risk having a leak at the joining point due to the little "imperfections" in the surfaces that the softer gasket would take car of. Also, some of that "goop" WILL get INSIDE of the intake manifold as you tighten it down to the head.
