cup holders again
A few months ago, there was a wood cup holder offered on ebay. It looked like a piece of wood with 2 holes cut in it. It fit into the console tray.
The ebay link has been dead for a long time and I have not seen those offered anywhere else. Did anyone get one at the time? or does anyone know where they might be available now? Thanks |

I remember those too, pretty slick, but pretty pricey!
Sounds like something that a member here needs to make in their wood shop and offer for sale to other members (sorry, not a "wood guy", unless you're talking stocks).

Can you provide the exact measurements of what you want ?
Best deal is to make one out of cardboard put together with duct tape... then measure the outside... include the size of the holes you want....and the placement.. put them in the car and use them a few days and see if they interfer with something like your elbow.... I am not promising anything but I have intended to get my wood working back in gear... and I have new mesquite cut down for the wood... I am going to make one for my car... In mine I am going to ' monogram' it with crushed turquoise in clear epoxy... I have seen jewelry boxes done this way(also made from mesquite) that look great... |

Looks like we've found our custom holder maker!!
Can you router a channel in the bottom for wiring for a cup heater to keep the coffee, tea, brandy, etc. warm while driving?? Maybe insulate the holes with thinsulate? How about adjustable for various sizes? TV screen? Mini laptop? GPS, DVD, etc?????

When this was talked about last time I went and got one of the non spill stainless steel vacuum insulated mugs which was mentioned...
Route channel no problem... If you came up with a safe design on the heater I would consider it.. but off hand that sounds dangerous... I could make it adjustable for several sizes... but seems better to pick a good mug and make it to fit it well... The other items ? I don't want you spending that much time looking down between the seats..... ... keep your eyes on the road..... For my car I was planning on making a matching shift knob... Also the possibility of using pewter for the inlay.... |

I remember that cup holder. I was going to make one but never got around to it / got a better idea. All it was was a piece of 1 x whatever cut to be as wide as the console and about 12" long. It had two 3" holes for cups. The top edges were rounded over with a router, including the holes. The bottom edge was routed out to sit on top of the edges of the console. You could make one in 15 minutes. I would only make a 1-hole, though. The second would be far under the armrest anyway.

Do what I did in my VW Rabbitt...
I went to the boat and RV dealership here in town. They sell cup holders that mount wherever you want to mount them. They flip down for use and flip back up when you don't need them. I mounted mine on the driver's door. When not in use the whole thing is about 1 inch thick and about 5 inches square. I plan to put one in my MB. They only cost $6.95 each and can be painted to match.
